Anyone running 255/70R17?

This is not a 'will it fit or rub' question or intended to aggravate anyone on Friday.

I did not find much in the archives and was just curious if anyone is running this size tire. It is about a 1/2" skinnier and taller than a 265/65R17 that come on the TRD Sport.

    If you are, thoughts?

I could be wrong but I think there's a lot more choices in 265/70/17's and maybe that's why more people choose those.

2nd gen, but I've got 255/70R17 on FJ steelies for winter tires. Partially because of what you mentioned with it being slightly taller and skinnier, also because they happened to be available in that size for a decent price. Obviously still very close to stock size so no rubbing, speedo is still very close to accurate, really nothing odd about running this size aside from it not being super common.

The 265/70/17's on my 22 Taco actually made the speedo more accurate.

255/80r17 Toyo AT3 on T4R "snowflake" wheels. TRD Off Road, Stock suspension. I have zero rubbing on or off-road, I have not gone "crawling" but for rough forest roads, it does fine. If 255/80's fit, I am sure you would be fine with 255/70.20221125_123803.jpg

I don’t have 255/70/17s, but I do have 255/75/17 Duratracs and I really like them. I think they’re the perfect size for my truck with a modest 1” lift (they’re 32x10). Mounted to SEMA 4runner wheels (+4mm offset), I get a tiny bit of rubbing on the front mud flaps once in a while. I will definitely buy these tires again (SL rated and only 40 lbs. each).

I’m sorry but why would anyone run 255/70/17? They are like .4” taller and .4” narrower.

255/70R17 Blizzaks are cheaper than 265/65R17! :D I mean a slightly taller and skinner tire during the winter gives a bit more clearance and less likely to float during snow conditions.. yeah, that's it..

No mods needed. Obligatory apples to apples picture time:

    In order,

    A: Stock suspension 265/65/17 wildpeak AT3s
    B: stock suspension 265/70/17 wildpeak AT3s
    C: 1" lift w/ +4 offset 265/70/17 wildpeak AT3s

Running Blizzaks in this size also. Is a surefooted setup for winter. And was almost $30 cheaper per tire than the equivalent 265 size that is only half an inch wider.

My math says a 265/70/17 would put my speedo dead on. It reads about 2 mph fast, so a 255/70 would roughly be accurate, and 255/75 would be a mile or two off in other direction.

Yes, no lift. Rubbed the mudflaps big time, pulled them, occasional rubbing on the inner fender liners near the back of the front wheel openings. Wouldn't suggest running them with a -10mm offset without a lift. Put on a set of 265/70/16 snows on stock 2nd Gen steelies for the winter an popped the mudflaps back on for the winter too. Gonna lift a little in the spring.

Look for 255/75r17. That was a Wrangler OEM size so you can usually find good deals. It’s a 32x10” tire and it’ll fit without rubbing

Another vote for 255/75r17 ! Duratracs in this pic but I’ve also had Mud Terrains in the past, same size. Currently have 55K on this set which far exceeds my expectations. Mix of highway, grid, off-road and as always lots of ice/deep snow!
Ran these on stock suspension for 6mos and then added a 2.5”/2” level. This is a stock Jeep size & in the past I’ve gotten these as take-offs from the Jeep dealers (just leave em your number, many of their clients swap or upgrade tires right off the lot)
Last set of MT’s I got was $800 installed which is about 1/2 of retail!
IMO this is the sweet spot for Tacoma tire size! Would love to mount some 255/80/17’s for a little more height but the selection is slim
