I am not really sure how efficient they work or if they even give the upgrades they claim but I see a few that offer a 7mile per gallon increase...has anyone used any that they can recommend

No chip is going to give even close to a 7mpg increase, not on a Tacoma at least.

From my understanding tuners/chips don't really do anything on our trucks. I haven't had one personally though.

No dealings with them myself, but the general consensus around here is they do little to nothing in these engines, same for "cold air intakes."

there is no such thing as a 'performance chip' that does any good

what you can do is try one, and waste money. Or get one that really does improve MPG but it does it by making you run super lean and your valves will burn up in 1000 miles, then you have engine damage. running critical lean you can get >480 miles a tank on a tacoma but engine will absolutely not last, and your whole exhaust system will be cherry red and might start a fire. (does this by faking a/f signals)

    ---
the ONLY 'performance chip' or 'reprogramming ecu' that actually works also involves thousands of dollars of engine work (new intake, injectors, cams, blower or turbo, ecu, headers)

    in other words, race modifications.

If there were a 200 dollar or less modification that would actually increase MPG without interfering with engine management and emissions, toyota would already have built it in...adding even 1 more mpg on the advertising would sell more tacomas immediately.

summary: don't get suckered. you either spend 3 grand or more for a complete job, or just don't bother

Okay... im not gonna get all high and mighty here, but I am going to say that there are a couple options that fall into the category of performance chips that do work.

The URD MAF Cal will give you more power if tuned right out of the box. You will not experience any fuel mileage increase as it only modifies open loop scenarios, but more power will be available.

The other option which is north of $1300 and only works on 05-08 trucks unless you wire it in is the URD UCON. These trucks are optimized for longevity from the factory and run very rich, so there is more power and mileage to be had. I wouldn't expect more than a couple mpg gain even with a very economical tune, but the potential is in fact there.

As for your $40 eBay chip that you were referring to. 100% does not work. You WILL be wasting your money.
