Anyone running these beefy CV axles?

    Bump.

Any more thoughts on these? Going to replace the front axle seals and fluid this weekend- It's a good time to swap in these extended CVs if they're still going strong.

I believe I also saw some pics where the boots weren't wearing as quickly either, right? So I'd be curious what those who have them think of the boot lifespan.

Boots ripped, but due to the design, they do not/have not leaked.

I posted an update in this very thread, and posting now is pretty much another update.

Just went out and took pics a few minutes ago; I'll post them up in a bit.

    So, just to give you an idea of my driving;

320 miles once a week, as I go out of town to my soon-to-be city of residence.

On top of that, any miles I put on to run errands.

Then, going to and from work.

I put an average of 13-1400 miles on my 4Runner per month.

    20210727_133052.jpg

    20210727_133038.jpg

You can see that there's no grease or anything anywhere (aside from the usual dirt/grime from the roads).

I've taken my vehicle on light to moderate trails often, and knowing I've got 3 OEM spare cv axles, I don't care if I push these things.

    No weird noise, nothing.

Thanks for the photos... It's a little disheartening to know the boots tear- I was really hoping that these CV's would be some sort of unicorn as they seemed to have so many other advantages to them. How many miles do you guess were on them before the boots tore / do you think it's fairly consistent to what you've experienced out of the poem reman/non-extended replacements?

    Ripped around April/May?

I'd say I had a good 5k miles on them or more before they ripped, and another 3k miles on them since.

If you have OEM cv axles, why not just get high angle boots for them?

Do the high angle boots work on something like the non-extended import direct (aka non-oem) CV axles?

Yes, but then the inhibitor would be your crappy CV axles.

So it wouldn't be worth putting nice boots on CV axles that actually limit suspension flex; I sure as hell wouldn't.

@eon_blue and I a few weeks ago were talking about flex/droop and he stated he noticed a difference in flex (or lack of) when he used a store replacement.

I would sure as hell love to go back in time and keep my OEM axles.. but that ship sailed without my consent (my dad thought he was giving me a nice gift to have my truck taken to a shop for a "tune up" while I was out of town for some reason they replaced the CV's with non-OEM and when I found out it was impossible to get the OEM ones back. He didn't understand why I was so upset).

So I guess I just keep taking these import direct ones back for free replacement every time they tear- damn.

You can find them in the forum, market place, CL, etc.

Nice thing is, once you find one, you can rebuild it at your leisure and put on some high angle boots.

Once your aftermarket set tears, replace as needed.

Keep the new import as a trail spare.

yeah I don't think it's worth rebooting parts store axles at all. You can get reman OEM CVs through a company like CVJ for less than new OEM.

For future ref, never let a shop keep your old OEM parts - they will happily "get rid" of them for you, but in reality they're returning them for cores/discounts on new parts lol.

Or they're rebooting them and selling them for profit

I'm fully aware of that- again, I was out of town, and my dad "gifted me a tune up". But that was 15 years ago.. Been running part store axles since then and I just get the free replacements when the boots tear.

the biggest downside to the parts store ones, besides shitty boots, is that you loose articulation with them. I have a Pep Boys special axle on one side and it droops noticeably less (like 2" at least) than the other side with an OEM axle.

It has held up for almost 2 years though, boots and all...surprisingly. I picked up some used axles off a 4runner though a couple weeks back that I'm going to replace it with.

Funny how I told myself to watch my cv axles yesterday during a full day of wheeling; still good!

Bumping this thread back up for; those who have posted and watched, those who have only read, and those new to checking these out.

I've run well over +12k miles on these and have to say, I've really put them through the paces as mentioned above.

One thing I've been doing in particular is, I've been going 4L and really hitting climbs (plenty of you know what I mean) and I am not afraid of the skinny pedal -

I do so because 1. these CV axles have a lifetime warranty and 2. I have 3 OEM CV axles on standby.

With that being said, I finally had to pull one as my CV axle seal was leaking more than usual. Here's me topping it off because I didn't want to risk driving with low fluid -

Anyway, here she is coming apart -

CV axle seal pulled, you can see the clear fluid dripping -

And the CV axle itself -

Now, onto the design on paper -

And last but not least, the CV axle itself. Awesome to see the assembly actually extend and collapse -

So you’re timing is great. I’ve spent two hours trying to get the tripod off my OEM cv. I’ve beat the ever-loving crap out of it and it isn’t budging. Completely cleaned, PB blaster in it, heated the tripod with a propane torch, nothing.

I’ve got to make a decision tomorrow and get my truck back in action. It’s been on jack stands for more than a week, when the plan was to put some 3rd Gen takeoff struts on my 06 with an AAL. But once you get the wheel off, you see problems everywhere (not to mention the caliper bolt that broke off in the knuckle…heli-coils coming tomorrow).

So should I get one of these or try to find an aftermarket boot that will fit/stretch over the tripod so I can keep them original? (Edit: Oreilly is saying they won’t fit an 06, so maybe that’s my answer)

Man, wish I could help but I am not at all familiar with second gens.

I'd click here and post your question in a new thread, with pictures - 2nd Gen. Tacomas (2005-2015) | Tacoma World

This section is dedicated to first gens, and the suspension is different.
