Thinking of switching out my recently purchased Goodyear Ultraterrains for a set of Michelin LTX at2. I have a 2013 DC TRD 4wd.

This is my second set of Ultraterrains and I’m switching for two reasons. Going back to a stock 265/70/16 (I have 265/75/16 now) They didn’t have stock in stock when I bought mine, so I upsized. Truck looks kind of goofy without a lift running larger tires.

Second reason, I moved to a place with a gravel road, and am tired of flinging rocks with the Ultraterrains. I know they’re off-road tires and part of deal, but the deep soft tread pick up rocks like you wouldn’t believe.

I’m on pavement 90 percent of the time, but do appreciate having an AT for certain instances. My goal is to get a good all around tire and would like to try Michelin. I am a bit concerned with the AT2 lack of a winter and snow rating. It sounds as if the compound is pretty hard for longevity but in turn creates not the greatest performance on ice and packed snow.

What’s the real world opinion on these as a tire, specifically in mixed driving and sketchy (snowy) weather?

Great choice for April through October for sure!

Some tires have stone ejectors molded into the tread rubber and most do not.

If you live where winter affects driving, get a set of four dedicated winter tires and be much safer on the roads for you, your family, ad everyone else on the winter roads.

In you situation I would probably go with the Michelin Defender LTX M/S over those.

Probably just a tad worse off road but should be significantly better in the snow and slush.

    mmiva0.ang.l.jpg

Ideally like already suggested you would have two sets of wheels/tires, one for winder and one for the rest if the year in your area.

Best tire you can get. I'm back with the M/S in the post above because they don't make the 285/75/16 in the AT/2 anymore.
Winter traction is the best of any tire I've run short of studs.
Great ride, great traction, great wear... Everything you want in a tire.

That’s good to know. I see you’re in Colorado so you definitely understand snow. Thanks.

I run the tires noted - LTX AT2 in stock oem size. No issues here with any condition including snow. Having and using 4x4 when the snow is a potential problem allows them to work fine (for me). If the snow is too deep and the roads are a mess I don't go out - too many dumb ass drivers here now. First sign of a wet pavement and like a bug to the light they all wreck. Better off to wait until after rush hours. Must admit I am not off trail like many - so that may alter your decision.

Holy smokes! Is that the At2 or ms in the photo? Also, when you mentioned the best tires short of studs, are you referring to the At2 or m/s?

I’ve had 3 sets and really like them. The last 2 sets have been Defenders. They do better on the highway and in ice and snow. The AT2s look better but are not nearly as quiet and smooth.

I am a big fan of the Michelin LTX A/T2. They are pricey but worth it. I'm on my second set and got 90k miles in 5 years on the last ones. I probably could have gone another year on them as they still had 8/32nds but had started cracking on the tread and sidewall.

I lived in KC for 3.5 years with some mild snow and never had any real issues. Then again I took it pretty easy in my Prerunner.

At2 in the picture. I wouldn't hesitate to do the same with the Ms though. I think they're pretty much the same tire. I would bet that carcass construction and rubber compound is identical.

I got the Michelin At2’s installed today. I really like them so far; seriously smooth tires. Acceleration is better as is overall ride quality. I went with letters out seeing as the truck is white. I must be getting old as this is the first Tacoma I’ve had with factory sized tires!

The Goodyear Ultraterrains weren’t a bad tire by any means, just not what I need these days.
