Anyone ever see this kind of thing before? Bought the 07 V6 tacoma new and now has 204xxx miles on it. Went boosted and refreshed the engine with a forged bottom end at 180k miles using a Cloyes timing kit. It's had regular oil changes it's entire life. Wondering if it's just mileage and me driving like a lunatic or if maybe there's a problem with Cloyes products though nothing jumped out when building?

I'd only wager that the tensioner was failing, but beyond that no idea.

That's a very interesting failure, I haven't seen a timing gear failure like that since the old GM's and Fords that had the nylon teeth on the cam gear that would fail like that. Never seen that in a modern engine though, I wonder if it didn't get heat treated properly at the factory or something.

Some of those teeth look more than stripped.
    A few look broken.

    Something isn’t right, bad gears?
Something pulled those teeth off for sure.

    Where did the pieces go?

Not sure what's going. All 3 tensioners seem to move freely with no excess wear on the plastic parts. Bank 2 gear is worn smooth and jumped time. Bank 1 the teeth are worn thin and as pointed out a few are broken. Haven't drained the oil yet so I'll check if they're at the bottom of the pan. With 204000 miles of being driven hard, the last 24000 being boosted wondering if it's wear or if something is up with the timing parts I used? Got another engine in the works so a full tear down is on the near future.

The only time I have seen teeth worn like that was due to a chain with too much tension.

The more I look at the pictures.
It looks like the only gears that are wearing are the drive gears on the back of the intake cam.
I don’t think there is a tensioner for the smaller drive chain is there?
Therefore, the tension is set. Right?

Tiny tensioner, they tend to fail on the slack side and help create the p0012/16 codes due to slap.

    3 chains, 3 tensioners.

Yes there is, I believe it's oil pressure fed.

    Thanks guys.

Now, I wonder if both sides did this or just the one?
OP didn’t say, (or I missed it one?)

Only time I've seen worn gears like that was on my Eurovan. The metal was too soft, there was an updated intermediate sprocket made to address the problem.

If chain tension wasn't correct I'd expect to see damage to the guides as well.

Probably a bad sprocket, it was aftermarket after all

That Cloyes timing kit came with new intake came gears, as well as chains? Or just chains?

Bad heat treatment - made in batches, so there will be more if that is the cause......... Worn teeth are weak and breakage is simply "end of life" failure mode. Is the Cloyes brand being built offshore?

The only time I've ever seen really weird chain and / or sprocket wear was back in my motorcycle days. Chains and sprockets wear as a set. If somebody replaced just a chain or sprocket and left worn components in the rest of the system, strange things usually happened just down the road.

Looked up available kits. Didn't see one with the intake cam gears. That means those chains would have to be the most likely culprit. Assuming oil changes were regular enough.

So the top gear in the first photo used to have teeth? If so that gear has worn incredibly smooth by, I assume, the action of the chain against it once the teeth were worn down and broken off. What are the consequences of that gear no longer being turned by the chain? That’s a pretty serious FOD concern for some combination of fine metal shavings and larger teeth chunks…how that hasn’t bit the engine is impressive, but I’m not well versed enough to picture where these gears lie and where that FOD might go.

I would put that motor completely apart before running it anymore. all the metal went right into the engine.
