Anyone throw their truck in “Park” while driving? Whoops!

I dont know about the Tacoma, but my 2015 Chrysler 300 had the rotary shifter. It had an electronic lock out and wouldnt go into park if you were moving. It would only go into park once fully stopped. Kept you from ruining a $4K transmission. Later it got reprogramed to go into park if in drive and you opened the drivers door after that Star Trek actor got crushed to death. Much prefer a regular shifter.

 

No there is nothing prevent you from going to park. It may be a safety feature if your brakes fail. Reverse is locked-out or not actuated on the way by (thank god).

It requires no special effort to do this. Didn’t have to overcome the lever or anything. Just a brain-fart on my part.

 

I went by reverse on the way to park. Thankfully the truck chose to outsmart me on that one.

That safety feature you speak of is the parking brake. Not the transmission

 

If you lost your rear brakes shoes, jam it in Park? Could do.

 

I mean if your truck is in such poor condition that the service brakes totally fail AND you have literally no rear shoes, then probably you should just crash it anyway.

 

I never had this happen to me but since this is my first Auto, several times I parked then press the start/stop while the truck is in D then all sorts of alarms and whistles start going off. I have a tendency/habit of pulling the ebreak all the time when I shut off the truck.

 

The only time I've ever done something similar to this was about ten years ago I was trying to get my car trailer into it's (tight) parking spot using my Silverado and I went from 'Drive' to 'Reverse' too quickly. As soon as the shifter hit 'R' the truck shut-down and wouldn't re-start for about 30 seconds. Scared the heck out of me. That was at least 13 years ago and no problems since. Sometimes it's nice to have vehicles which are smarter than us LOL!

 

Based on the lack of responses of doing something similar with a Tacoma, I may just be the biggest dunce on TW. That’s ok, my dog still loves me, and you all get to learn from my mistake.

Normally the shift gate design is considered sufficient protection, because you need to move the shifter in a pattern to go D > N > R > P, not a straight pull. The gate design has been in use for the past 17 years since the 2nd gens appeared in mid-2004.

Some people move the shifter into R while driving to see the backup camera...

 

Well......I guess I proved you can get away with it.

I wouldn’t have the balls to do it if I had an AT, haha!

 

Leaving it in S mode would help prevent the AT money shift if you have a right hand with a mind of it's own.

 

Good point, but honestly the trauma will likely keep me from ever doing this again.

 

I think you gotta be in the White House or a congressman for that, or at least be a superior court judge.
