Yes, much different MPG towing compared to my 2006 2.8L Diesel Jeep Liberty, used to get 20MPG on the same trip with the same load out. It is worth noting that I get 20-23 MPG driving commuting to work, depending on traffic.

    I agree. My 250 gets a combined about 13-14mpgs. Towing 2500lbs I'd get about 12mpgs HAHA
    So much for midsize MPGs.

Thanks for first real tow review! My Casita camper is probably 3500 lbs loaded to the brim, so this gives me a good indication on how it tows. MPG leaves something to be desired but I bet if you were on flat roads you would get much more.

Lyle does your truck have the JBL system too? If so that's the exact truck I'd buy if I were to purchase a new tacoma. Super white perfect color. On a side note wonder if my 2011 BMW 335d motor (6cyl twin turbo diesel) would fit in a Taco? ;)

Really nice looking setup, azlyle. Do you know the tongue weight of the camper? Do you use a weight distributing hitch? Normally I prefer silver, but your Taco looks really good in white. And I really need to get to Arches NP.

I tow a Rockwood A-Frame camper that is really tongue heavy (420#) and am trying to gauge the Tacoma to eventually replace my now oversized Tundra.

Yes, it has the technology package and the JBL system with subwoofer. The audio sounds awesome! I was very lucky with timing on this truck... My diesel Jeep Liberty was totaled in September when I collided with a black cow, at night, on a rural two-lane highway, towing my trailer to the Chiricahua National Monument near Tucson, AZ. A week later I walked into my local Toyota dealer to test drive a 2016 Tacoma and they had a Super White 2016 DCSB OR AT 4x4 with Premium & Technology Package, JBL Audio, and Towing package already on it's way to the dealer. I signed that day and took delivery 3 days later on the exact configuration I was planning to order. All I had to do was add a brake controller and install my mobile ham radio for our trip to Arches (and Dead Horse State Park). We ran a few trails in Moab and I ended up testing out the skid plates, so I will be adding a 3" lift sooner than later.

So you felt like you had good torque on high passes? Good passing power? What were your revs normally at when towing?

Tongue weight around 280lbs and I don't use a weight distributing hitch.

Until last week, all of my towing experience was with my diesel Jeep Liberty that had a tuned ECU for approx 330lb of torque at 1900 RPMs. The 2016 Tacoma V6 obviously falls short of that, but I felt like I had enough power. On the flat sections, I could cruise at 65-75 MPH in the appropriate to keep the revs in the 2K range, but on any grade I'd have to take her up to around 4K RPMs. That said, she pulled great at the higher RPMs and I never felt like I didn't have enough power.

I don't think it ever saw the showroom floor. I bought it sight-unseen from Camelback Toyota and picked it up the same day it arrived, three days after I paid for it.

I can't think of any full size that would have done worse than 12.5 with the same weight.

this was 6,000 lbs + 2 passengers + hundreds of lbs of gear, 20mpg avg over 1,000 miles - including through Flagstaff

The benefit to the Tacoma though is normal MPG and driveability when not towing. Most people with Tacomas only tow occasionally so poor towing MPG is not that much of a concern.

Weekend warriors with quads, dirt bikes, popup campers? The Tacoma sounds like the perfect vehicle for that... but not if you rake in 12.5mpg and grind on the motor to maintain speed.

So the moral of the story here is "Don't buy a 16 Tacoma if you regularly have to tow things over 1000-1500lbs."

If I regularly towed anything, I wouldn't get a Tacoma. But if I wanted a truck to tow a few times a year that is manageable to drive daily, I would maybe get a 3rd gen Tacoma.

You'll need cams that favor low end power at the cost of high end power.
