This truck is measured against the J2807 towing standard...many factors are considered in this test. If it is rated at 6400lbs 4x4 then it is probably pretty accurate against other vehicles that have also been measured under the standard. What about the pre-standard vehicles, how would they have performed? Would they have been rated as high?

If one is towing more than 1,500 pounds regularly, they should probably just bite the bullet and step up to a 1 ton diesel.

1500lbs is not a lot of weight. The truck is rated for a lot more for a reason. It can pull it. They don't just throw a number up and say boy that sounds good. Mine is rated for 6400 lbs because it can pull it. You can have 4 passengers that weights 1500 lbs.

Yeah the four banger should be able to pull 1500 lbs relatively easy too.

A one ton to pull more than 1500 lbs. some of you have no idea about trucks what so ever. You should sell yours and just drive a Prius.

I was being sarcastic, LOL :)

I tow my roughly 2,000 pound fishing boat all the time with my truck and it does it without any problem at all. I know that 2,000 pounds is nothing as far as weight, but I'd not hesitate to tow more than that. My previous boat was around 3,500 pounds and the Taco towed it fine as well, although I did keep it in 4th gear most of the time (towing in hilly central British Columbia). That trailer also had brakes, which made a big difference.

Just pulled my 2500lb boat up and down grades no greater than 6.2%, it wasn't setting any land speed records but didn't have trouble either. You should be fine

Just drove my truck through the mountains today. No way I would put more than 1500-2000lbs on the back and expect to maintain any sort of speed. Had to downshift to 4th just to maintain 75 on 5% grade

thats a pretty decent time, are you having trouble hooking? My old corrado was around 600hp at the wheels and I was in the mid to high 10s. Mind you it was fully gutted and built for drag only. But at 575hp could be close to a high 11s.

Either way, I have never once seen someone tow a track car to the track with a taco. When I had my rado it was trailered each time as well and it was pulled by my buddys 2500 cummins.
Actually I don't think I've seen many people tow with anything less than a 2500. I guess depends on what kind of trailer you want. All the ones I've ever used were big, had two sets of tires, spare rims, full tool box, two jacks, 4 jack stands. all in a fully enclosed trailer. full size could probably pull it...but heavy duty is probably better

Didn't seem to have any trouble at all. Mostly just pulling around Moab and back and forth to green river. It pulled well going up the steep grades to some of the trails. With all the gear I'd say about 2500lbs.

Serious or sarcasm? I used to tow a little over 1,000lbs with an old Saab 9-3 regularly. In my understanding, these trucks aren't meant to be used to pull down buildings but I'm sure they can handle a decent amount of weight on a regular basis! Then again, I am new to Tacomas! I could be missing a running joke or something! :anonymous:

I tow a 5000lb 24' JC tri toon around lake havasu...it's fine. I'll take a photo of the thing on the boat ramp, no issues at all. As a matter of fact my dad's AWD highlander does it - so you guys should have no concerns over jet ski's, ATVs, etc.

I hope it's sarcasm because that statement is a joke.

How badly is a brake controller needed for your setup? Should I be concerned pulling my trailer and ATV's (see attached). My 2013 Prerunner seems to handle it fine.

So I guess the question I would have, is with a 3rd gen DCLB auto with factory towing, should I add a big ass transmission cooler to it?

yes. they test it in over 100 deg heat in arizona going up 12% grade that's almost 12 miles long at gross combined weight with max ac. Flat Florida should be no issue.

Great! One less thing to worry about. I will get the scangauge still though, just to keep an eyeball on it. I plan on keeping this truck for 30 years.
