This is actually wrong. Over the lifetime of a vehical you will spend a lot on fuel. Say he gets 20mpg to be conservative. Drives the thruck 150,000 miles before he gets rid of it and gas is about 3 bucks a gallon. 15000 miles ÷ 20mpg = 7,500 gallons. Multiply by cost per gallon and you just spent another $22,500 on top of what you paid for the truck. Also we know hes probably not getting 20mpg. Either way fuel is expensive and just part of owning a truck. If he keeps the tesla long enough to go 150,000 miles and his job charges it for free that whole time, he will be saving about 22 grand.

Going electric only reduces gasoline usage, and no doubt reduces emissions but doesn't eliminate them. Once we have more energy harnessed from renewable resources with out creating massive waste issues, then I’ll be on board. And wind mills seem to be a waste, solar panel are filling our waste piles, hydro can screw up rivers and streams. Not sure what the right answer is, but if I was to try it would be making solar panels better, there is enough energy in one days sun output to power us for some crazy amount of time, years and years if I recall correctly.

No Tesla owner is point A to point B driver. They probably fall into the categories of: 1) loving the tech, 2) being environmentally conscious, and/or 3) wanting the status symbol.

A point A to point B driver buys a Carolla and drives it until the wheels fall off.

Tesla fan boys are the next generation of 3 series douches. I'm cool cuz I got instant torque.
The rest of the car is for show.
Seriously though Tesla having quality issues. Expected from a relatively new company.
    Wouldnt buy

Miles per gallon. Mentioned nothing about economics. And technically you could have big savings depending on how much you drive. 50k isn’t that much more than a Tacoma. You can actually get them for less. I just built one online for $29,000

When I lived in DC a model 3 would have paid for itself. I drove about 30k miles a year. If I still lived there and put those miles on, a model 3 would make perfect sense

There are several factors at play here but assuming there are no mechanical failures and just routine maintenance a Tacoma will cost more in the long run.

Everyone will have a different personal economy, but there are benefits to owning a model 3 than just looking cool.

Bleh, let’s go back to talking Tacomas! :)

Mpg and money not spent = economical. I guess my point is that there's cheaper cars that are just as economical. Hence my idea that people don't buy Tesla's for fuel savings since money spent on the car can buy a LOT of gas.

I would if I didnt need a truck. Interesting how many 3rd gen owners it seems don't actually need a truck.

Yup! Unless you want more tech and luxury while trying to hold the idea of staying green.

I'll just mount a 4G iPad in my truck, problem solved. Maybe a Prius leaf emblem. OP join the band wagon and save the fuel for us trucks.

Love my truck but also considered trading for a Tesla recently. But decided I wanted the truck more. Ideally, Tesla for DD and keep the truck as well.

Plus no oil changes/ filters and other costs associated with ICE plus brakes last a lot longer as braking is usually controlled by plugging with reversing of electrical motors. Electric forklifts usually require 1/4 the maintenance of ICE. The only real issue is battery life but they are getting better and less expensive as mass production kicks in

Both my parents have Tesla’s and they haven’t spent a dollar on repairs. Yes, they have had a few issues with door handles not releasing, sunroofs, and mirrors not folding in all the way, but every time Tesla actually comes to your house to repair it for free. Also, people are worried about finding charging but you just plug it in at your house every night just like your phone. Super easy! If you don’t need an off road or camping car, model 3 might be the way to go. Hopefully in my future I have a Tesla and a taco.

Sell your Tacoma for a TESLA? WTF?

Tesla’s won’t fit everyone’s needs, but if your employer offers free charging, that can save quite a bit of money. I currently spend over $400/month alone in fuel. That was more than my monthly truck payment. It was essentially like having a second car payment. Also, if you live in a major metro area with terrible traffic, having autopilot for stop-and-go traffic can be a major stress reliever. I view the Model 3 as mostly an appliance. But it’s one that won’t fit everyone’s needs. And while I prefer driving the taco over a Model 3, to say the Model 3 is a snooze to drive is just wrong. It’s faster than my Hemi Charger.
