Im needing a laptop for school. We currently have a toshiba satellite and its been great. but it seems like every 2-3 years laptops crap out...

I want something that will get me through school, write papers, homework, browse internet well, and stream and download music..

I was looking at Macs but they are really pricey. Someone else suggested a Chromebook. Thoughts?

I know Samsung makes good products and that computer looks legit and for that price I'd probably give it a shot.

I would consider that there is no MS Office for Chromebook, however in my experience, google drive is just as good. Will your school require you to run any software that would require a pc/mac?

MacBooks are pricey because of how well built they are; they typically last beyond that '2-3 years and then crap out' phase. My gf has had her original MacBook since her 1st year of college and it has been through the ringer and back during all 4 years, and yes it's still kicking. I just recently upgraded her RAM and she claims it's like the day she got it. I was a PC fan my whole life and just recently switched to a MacBook Pro and LOVE it. Out of the box the machine is beyond fast and just beautifully designed. I don't really mind the constant 'outdating' with newer technology every few months so the decision to keep this MacBook for a few years if not more was the right one for me. If you're the type who likes the newest, fastest stuff out then I would just go with the cheaper route and run it into the ground this school year, scrap it and repeat. But think of it this way; a decent, cheap laptop will run you roughly ~$600~ and last a couple of years, after that you need to replace it for another ~$600~ giving you a total of $1200 spent during your 4year school course. Hope my insight helps you make a good decision and GOOD LUCK!

edit: Here is a guy on TW selling his used MacBook Pro for $500 to TW members.

Not so - google drive can really tard up formatting. I have an Excel report I send in to the State every month. I tried sending it through Google and it wrecked a lot of the columns.
Additionally, professors get anal about having things exactly the way they want. You'd better be able to cater to their whims.

PC laptops crap out because people buy cheap and expect gold. Buy a good PC and it will last you just fine - Lenovos have a great build quality and I've heard lots of people liking their Vaios. However, everyone goes for the economy Dell and the bargain HP.
With Macs, people don't have that option to buy cheap, which is why people tout them as a better system - you just have to compare at a similar level.

I bought my wife a chromebook last Xmas. It's been great for surfing the web and such, but that is about it. I don't see where it would excel at word processing. I would just pick up a cheap PC. It will cost more up front, but will save you from headaches in the long run.

Congratulations. Do you use it for anything more than just turning it on and browsing the Internet? :p

Buy a new Mac and pay through the nose for it. Then add Office and whatever other programs you'll need and shell out a few hundred more.

Buy a new PC and save a few bucks. It'll come with Windows 8, a piece of shit desktop OS, but you'll learn to live with it -- maybe.

Or buy a good used late model laptop, install Linux Mint 15 (download from www.linuxmint.com), add WINE so you can install and run Windows programs, and save a ton of headaches not to mention a ton of money...

This. Lenovo (formerly IBM) Thinkpads are very well built. They are popular in the business world.

No lol. If I buy a new battery it'll run fine though. I was never too comfortable sitting with a laptop for any extended amount of time anyways.

We have a chrome book, I bought it for my wife for school, it's awesome. Fast, and runs well. Plus it has google chrome Remote Desktop which lets you get into your home pc for anything you may need that it cannot do... I have not found anything like that yet. Google docs is very comparable to MS office, and the Internet works awesome. I'd get it!

We all have dell laptops and have had excellent luck with them. Mine is going on 5 years trouble free (exception battery) my wife and daughters about 4 years trouble free. I think they build a better laptop than desktop if they even sell desktops anymore. I think an 11'' screen for everyday use is a little small.
