You do have a good point about not being able to get the maps in zero reception areas. although i know it keeps a cache so if you only lose reception for a few minutes you're fine, but if you go out of service area completely you are probably screwed. although i do think there are apps out there that allow you to pre download maps for that very situation, but it only works if youknow you are going to need them and download them in advance

Yeah that is the issue with phone/GPS interface...dependent on cell service. In the mountains of colorado not dependable enough to rely on and only in the deepest darkest canyons do you not get GPS satellite info. Plus the downloadable apps dont put your location on them when no cell service. Keep the Garmin...you know you need more toys!!!

considering the garming is a GPS unit and the cell phone app is also if the phone one is lost so will the garmin. when the phone loses service it will save your last point until it regains service just like garmins so you will still have access to the maps option just not the voice command navigation until it regains service.

neither of them will work 100% percent of the time, i do a mexco trip every year to go ride and travel baja. i had the garmin, then i switch to the tom tom, then to soem other brand. and for the money and the subscription the phone app works just as good everywhere i hae been anad update new roads and ect faster, plus you dont have to buy the update cd's for your cell phone

the phone has an acutal gps chip set. so even if you are out of cell range it still communicates with teh satellites and you can still get your exact coordinates

I've used my droid when I have to deliver to places I'm not familiar with. It does alright, but the Garmin is better. The majority of the time my droid is off by about 1/4 mile or so. None of them are usually perfect, but I've used my droid and my TomTom at the same time to see which was closer, and the TomTom was closer every time.
