I'm going to be painting my wheels next week and was wondering what paint people have used to do theirs?

I'm looking at Rust-oleum Wheel paint in flat black and their hammered on finish. I don't want a gloss or satin finish though, so the Hammered on may be out of the question.

So what have you used and how has it held up?

I used Duplicolor regular automotive spray paint in a satin finish- Holds up great. No damage except minor rash from wheeling trips.

I have used the duplicolor stuff before. I works pretty well. Its really all about the prep work. If you put a clear coat on it, it will hold up longer.

On my Honda Accord I had before the Taco I had a set of 17" Rota Subzeros that I painted gold. I actually just used some metallic gold spray paint from Ace Hardware. Then I clear coated it. Had them for about 3 years painted and still looked good when I sold the car. I had to touch them up whenever I got new tires put on because no matter how careful you tell the tire guys to be, they are still going to scratch them mounting the new tires.

One trick I do is a take a 20" Box fan and turn it upside down, and prop it up on paint cans. Put it on low and set the wheel on top of it. It basically acts like a little downdraft paint booth so you dont get as much overspray lingering leaving a smoother finish.

I don't know, busting a lock open in a freezer after thawing out ice by holding it up to the light was pretty cool too.

Thanks for the idea, I'll have to give a shot.

    Ha ha...another classic.

Did you paint your wheels with the hammered paint yet? Waiting to see how they came out. Want to do my Sport rims the same.

No not yet, I don't think I'm going with the hammered. I just don't like the gloss look, I prefer the flat wheel paint.

Have you considered powdercoating? I met a guy with a tacoma that had his wheels powdercoated. He wanted mazzi hulk (sp?) in black but they only had chrome and black and satin. so he bought chrome wheels and then had them powder coated.

I have but I don't have an extra set of wheels or the money to do the powder-coating or I would.

I like the Krylon flat black idea, it's cheap and easy to get. I will just have to prime before I paint the wheels with it. I used it to paint my All Pro bumper and it's holding up well, I just need to touch up a few places from rocks and stuff.
