I will only think about getting a 3rd Gen if they have a D4D option which I am going to go out on a limb and say they will not. I love my truck too much to just get a little better motor.

    Nope.

I'll drive and enjoy my 10 day old 2010. Why wait?

When a new Tacoma arrives on the scene...if you love it in 2012 or 2013 or later...you could always trade up.

    Only on TW.com......
With only 9 more HP than the Fronty, and the Fronty is only slower in automatic. With a stick (which is perfectly geared I might add), the Fronty us quicker, with comparable mileage. Nissan is one transmission speed from being a powertrain equal to the Taco.
I've owned both, so I am not guessing or bench racing.
First midsize with 6 speed auto, and Direct Injection will be the one to have, any guesses which manufacturer is going to be first?

Tacoma with a small block V8 AND the 6 speed slushbox would be in my driveway tomorrow. :D

Preferably the 5.0 Ford small block. Awesome motor and the best exhaust note in the business.

We should be in flying cars by then so I'll have to start doing research on what it takes to get a Taco to experience sustained flight. The aerodynamics on the current generation are a b*tch, hopefully 5th gens clear that hurdle.

I would not buy the 1st year of the 3rd gen truck.......I would wait maybe a year or two to let them fix the issues it may have.........Look at all the small issues w/the 2005 they had......I think they worked most of them out and made some improvements by 2007.............

My money is on Ford's upcoming F-100 to have both of these.

If it continues Ford's trend over the past 5 years of building very reliable, quality vehicles, it could give the Japs a run for their money.

    200k shouldn't be a problem. I have 155k & no issues.

Why you aiming so low? My goal is 500k. 250k is pretty much guaranteed with Honda/Toyota.

I couldn’t agree more! Unfortunately, unless Toyota really has a rabbit up its sleeve for the Tacoma, it will be Ford. The current Ranger is coming out of production in 2011, and I’m sure they will offer a new Ranger. This new Ranger will probably have Ford’s new 3.7 V6 which by the way puts outs 300hp & 275 lb-ft, and they will probably offer a small Eco-Boost, like 2.2 liter, that would be close if not more hp & torque than Tacoma’s current 4.0 only with much improved fuel economy! Check out the engine options in the new 2011 F150: http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/08/ford-introduces-three-new-lightduty-engines-for-2011-f150-pickup-trucks.html I’m guessing the 3.7 V6 in the F150 will give the Tacoma a run for its money on MPG’s with very similar towing capacity for a much bigger vehicle.
I don’t know where Toyota does it market research, I know Ford offers a place for people to post ideas for future products:
    http://www.thefordstory.com/your-ideas/
    http://www.thefordstory.com/your-ideas/?icat=11&ord=popular
It’s my hope that Toyota reads websites like this for product feedback/ideas. Toyota really needs to step up and improve the mechanical technologies it employs. Ford is offering direct injection dual VVT-I twin turbo engines with 6 speed transmissions. We have the 4.0 V6 single VVT-I with 5sp Auto and a 2.7 I4 single VVT-i with 4sp auto (very dated!).
Another note : GM is planning a number of mechanical updates for the 1500’s which will be all new for 2014 (Toyota did announce that the next generation Tundra will be out BY 2014 – a press release). For example, on top of power train improvements, GM has announced it’s going with electric power steering in the 1500’s to help squeak out even more MPGs.
-sorry for the long post, I just hate hearing about the mechanical upgrades in other OEM products that Toyota doesn’t offer.

Have you driven the 2011 F150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost?

Do you know what the MPG rating is for the 2011 F150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost?

The Ford 3.5L EcoBoost puts out ~400hp & ~400 lb-Ft, the 5.7L in the Tundra puts outs 381hp & 401 lb-ft. I’m sure the EcoBoost will get more than 1 MPG better than the 5.7L in the Tundra (~60% reduction in displacement with similar output). Plus with the twin turbo on the 3.5L EcoBoost the peak torque is early in the power band so the performance is more like a diesel.

You don't think auto manufacturers are losing sales of compact/mid size trucks to full size trucks because the fuel economy gap is closing? If a manufacture can make full size trucks that have the same fuel economy as a compact/mid size truck the demand for the later decreases. ß the only reason I compared the full size truck to the Tacoma

Fuel economy numbers haven’t been released, read the article, we will have to wait until September for that.

By the way I’m a very loyal Toyota guy. I have ONLY bought Toyotas to date, in fact I currently own 3 Toyotas. Like I stated I just hate hearing about other manufactures coming to marketing with new technologies in their trucks before Toyota.
