I have a 05 2wd and it's honestly really good in the snow, yes I have some mods and good offroad tires. Snow of coarse being on the street, however.... I would love to go offroading when it's snowing or muddy. I have never done this and looks like a lot of fun, I ride my dirtbike in the woods all the time and it's a different world out there, nothing like getting away from the concrete jungle. Maybe i'll get an TRD Offroad one day, gonna enjoy my paid off truck for a while longer. :D

Not everyone needs 4x4. People who don't offroad and are from the deep south have no need; people from the upland south and north who already have inclement weather vehicles and don't offroad. Personally I grew up in the midwest and about 10 minutes from the nearest town. I didn't already have an inclement weather vehicle and I do hit the easy trails occasionally so I honestly got my taco BC it was the cheapest 4x4 made and my family has never had issues with our 4 Toyota products.

To clarify, I'm married so the consolation part isn't up for discussion. :p

I live near Charlotte, NC. It's not *supposed* to snow here but every few years we get something that shuts the place down. I could do chains but for the little we do get it's more trouble than it's worth. The butt end of my truck tried to turn around on me last year though, on an icy 2-lane road not far from home, so I'm a little skittish about taking it out in snow and ice after that. Just driving along slow - didn't hit the brakes or anything. I know 4x4 wouldn't cure that but I'm sure some folks can relate about features they didn't get. I did that with my 2006 access cab when I decided I wanted the double cab. Trading was the right decision for me.

I just see the 4x4's around and they look good. It's not really about the Joneses for me - I can't afford that crap. If I could I'd be driving an Infiniti G37 coupe. ;) I love my truck, and I'd still have it, but I'd love a little sporty car one day . . .

This is the first winter I've had my 2010 TRD Sport DC 4x4. It has snowed several times here this winter - no blizzards - but a few 6+ inch snowfalls. I'm glad I got the 4x4 - but in all honesty I tried and have been able to get around just fine in 2WD. I'm not regretting the cost of the 4x4 - I would not have a 2WD truck in the part of the country I live in. But, I don't really do very much off road driving - so if I lived further south where snowfall over 4 inches was pretty rare - I think a 2WD truck would be just fine.

Strange logic, you have TRD truck but you supposedly can not afford 4x4 ?? TRD costs more then 4x4. Am I missing something here?

Blue T - I decided when I purchased that I liked the amenities of the TRD better than the lower-trim levels that did have the 4x4. I found the seats way more comfortable than my 2006 (which was a prerunner SR5). I guess I should add that it wouldn't have been that much more for a truck like mine that *was* 4x4, if I remember correctly from my purchase last January. Just decided at the time I could live without it and spend less. And, truth be told I have and I can. Just sometimes wish I'd decided differently a year ago. Love the truck though.

I regret getting my 5-lugger when I think about the fun of offroading and on the 5 days out of the year when there is so much snow that it really won't go anywhere. But the other 360 days of the year I think about how it gets up to 10mpg more on the highway than the 4x4 (I averaged 31mpg on my last trip to Atlanta).

I drive about 15k a year so 26mpg vs 20mpg saves about 500 bucks a year in fuel cost (assuming gas is $3.00 a gallon). So If I kept this truck for 10 years and gas never went up I would save a minimum of $10,000 taking into account the extra cost of 4x4 initially.

Is that worth trading in just to have some fun offroading and beating around in the snow? Yes. Yes it is. I love my truck but I'm getting a 4x4 next time.

Well put, which is what most 2x's are. A lot of the guys that have pre-runners, spend a crap load of money on them. There are many owners of 2x4's that spend so much money on their trucks making them look like a 4x4, that it would have been cheaper to just buy a 4x4. Then when they tried to go keep up with the 4x's offroad, they could.

    Look, and act the part...

Yeah but you comparing apples to oranges. Take fuel mileage of prerunner then compare that to same truck but 4x4. Friction difference between two vehicles is equal to around 10 bearings. There is not going to be much difference in mileage between two. Driving style, and maintenance will play much bigger role.

:D By the end of the winter I regret not regretting where I live.
I could use 2 inch snow storms cause the almost 2 footers are tiresome.
Also I would love to have major cold blast of 32 F :p
Would be nice to not have a need to engage 4x4 just to go get mail from mailbox.

Really I'm comparing the cheapest 2wd vs the cheapest 4wd... Apples to oranges would be my 15k 5-lug to a 30k TXpro or something like that. Anyway I would rather have a 4x4. We had almost a foot of snow yesterday here so my truck didn't leave the driveway.
