Anyone with a 3rd gen that previously owned a 2nd gen regret the decision to upgrade?

I'm looking to purchase a Tacoma sooner rather than later, and was just curious on what the almighty forum had to say

No regret on getting a 3rd gen. I liked the 2nd gen and didn't have any problems - but is was time to upgrade.

Did you purchase the 3.5 v6? Power is noticeable?

Can't comment on the new v6 power since my '17 has the 2.7L 5 spd. Will say my 2nd gen had the v6 and had plenty of power.

Take a 3rd Gen for an Over night test drive, that way you can see if it fits your needs.

OP as Tom pointed out when I had the issues with my 16 I was looking at getting back into a 15. I'm happy with my 17 but its still early too, they are different trucks for sure, I would test drive one and make sure it fits your needs.

Had a 2010 DCLB Sport 4x4. Sold it a few years back for a 2013 JKU Wrangler--that thing kicked ass off road, but then I had a family and some of my needs changed. Now have 2017 DCSB Off Road 4x4. I'm not sure there is anything I liked better about my 2nd gen. I will be crucified for saying this since it is not the cool thing to do right now--but I actually like the new engine/transmission much better.

Honestly i love my 17 and didnt have any worries at all when i first got it and the following week of driving it. After dipping into many of the "problem" threads it kind of made me question my decision and had me convinced my truck was going to blow up roll over and die at any moment . But i learned that this is the internet and so many of these trucks have been sold and are problem free ( including mine ). So i stopped looking into the problem threads on here and i havent questioned my decision since. After all there are lemons and issues with every gen or car manufacturer out there. But anyways 9k trouble free miles here. Only problem is all the money ive drained out of my bank account on mods.:oops: But definitely a major upgrade compared to my 06 ac cab:thumbsup:

Some where just silly QA things, I had the lower control arm whistle (remedied with the plugs/inserts), had my driver side mirror interior clips bust for no reason and a dash rattle (dealer fixed under warranty), had no grease on the zerks (fixed myself after delivery), ubolts not torqued (fixed myself), transmission needed 1/4 of fluid and had the TSB software update to fix the delayed 1st to 2nd and reverse to drive, biggest was the differential humming that got louder with mileage, they replaced it twice before Toyota and me came to an agreement to move into a different truck. Besides that I still have faith in Tacoma/Toyota and think the 3rd gen is a great truck, my 17 has had no issues as of yet and I'm at 4k miles/4 months ownership. Though I haven't really been looking for them either, I have found life to be better when you're not trying to nit pick your brand new truck and who are we kidding the 2nd gens weren't perfect either. I will say the powertrain is a different feeling which may or may not be for you which is why I would suggest driving one first. Good luck man!

First off, Thank you for keeping us trolls fed

Second, my 3rd gen didn't start giving me issues ( or I didn't notice them ) until around 800-1000 miles.
I regretted the decision to trade my 2nd gen for a 3rd gen without question. All pissing and Moaning aside it all worked out cause I have a different Toyota vehicle now which I love.
Before you bastards roast me, he asked :quickdraw:

I have a 2nd gen and really wanted to get a new 3rd gen but totally turned off by the auto transmission on my test drive. Insignificant "hills" (CD mag said it best, even a whiff of a grade) that my 2009 cruises right up in overdrive gets dramatic 2 gear downshifts in the 3rd gen. You really need to drive one and see if it is something you can live with. YMMV.

All these people complaining about the transmission shifting when going up a hill... what do you expect? That is kind of what they do--they shift gears to stay in the power band. Mine does it smoothly and effectively, and as a result my gas mileage is pretty good when cruising and still have power when I want it as well.

I guess if I was towing all the time there might be some warrant to the concern?
