I went with a Yakima System which attaches to shell using landing pads. Tent extends about 3 inches above the roof of the shell.

Did you have to strengthen the fiberglass with a structure or anything? I am thinking about doing the same thing and have a similar shell and was wondering if it can hold the weight?

I was told by my local shell distributor that the LEER QR shell (I think its the highest end one in that series) can hold like 9 people standing on it before things get weird. The only thing I still want to add is bed stiffeners. I think Total Chaos makes them. The shell itself is solid, but I've had issues with the tailgate clearance as a results of the bedsides tomato canning under the weight.

I have bed stiffeners that I have not yet installed but no issues without. I did go with the overland model since it is supposed to be a bit stronger. CVT stated that they have installed hundreds of these tents on camper shells and have yet to have any issue. However, I still feel bed racks are stronger but I needed the shell for storage, etc. Also keep in mind the size and weight of the tent and what you will be doing. I would not want to be doing any crazy off camber stuff because physics is physics. A 140-185 lb tent that high up is gonna affect your center of gravity and would put a lot of lateral stress on the rack and shell.

I always thought that the RTT has to be on a bed rack

I had my shell dealer install the rack. You can order the shell with the tracks and then install whatever rack system you want. 2 cross bars

I used to have mine on the Snugtop Rebel shell using 3 yakima crossbars with no issues. I have since moved it to a trailer.

worked great with zero issues... except the rear leafs (stock) hated it, which prompted the need for ride rites.
