I'm looking for people with CBs in the area on Hwy 50, east of sac. Anywhere from Folsom all the way up to South Lake Tahoe. I'm in Placerville so if you're ever going through there, give a holler for "sheepdog", I mainly operate on CH 10. If anyone want's to do this, it would be great so we can hook up and talk tacos or go wheelin.

Amatuer radio. It requires a license. But, the lowest level test is real easy. Its far more advanced than CB. You can use bands that are better for short range communications plus there are repeaters. The mount vaca repeater you can talk mobile from lake tahoe to the bay area, down to Santa nella and up to redding and most the repeaters can be linked to the internet and allow you to talk around the world. its way better than cb and the radios are way cooler.

Here is my radio. Well the face of it.

That's tight. But it looks and sounds expensive.

Mine is expensive. but an entry level mobile radio will run you $100 new... or you can find used ones for cheaper. They run 50 watts.

can you give us insight on a good ham radio, and where to buy a used radio, also, does it require tuning like a cb? and what kinda of antenna do we need? thanks!

You will need to check into the licensing requirements for canada. but for the US guys. info below.

You need to get a license first. the most popular band for short range mobile communications is 2 meters.

a good place to study is ham test online. Its a pure memorization technique. The question pool is fixed and so are the answer choices for those questions. but there are plenty of free places to study.

Then you take the test at a test session. they are given lots of different places.

This Yaesu FT-1900 is a good starter 2m radio. Unfortunately you dont get into the remote face radios till you buy a dual bander.

No tuning required. wire it up and start using it.

There are lots of options for antennas and antenna mounts.

Ham radio is great. Most people are scared off by the test and the rules. but, it really is a far better method for radio communications. the VHF/UHF stuff is just the tip of the iceberg of what you can do with ham radio.

Thats pretty cool. Yeah all of our aircraft run vhf/uhf/hf and can get some insane distance. would be pretty cool to pick that up and start using it.
