Just had my BSM system repaired on my 16 OR. Thank goodness for the Toyota extended warranty that I purchased & it already paid for itself twice over. My bill would have been $2600 otherwise.

I just had this issue yesterday. Started the truck in the morning to go to work and got the beeping and the warning message. Looked at both bumpers and nothing seemed out of place. Stayed that way and wouldn't work during the 20 minute drive to work. Came out after work at the end of the day and no warning or message, and works fine. No issue this morning either. Something to keep an eye on I guess!

Damnit mine just went on onto my way to work this morning. Hoping the warning is off when I leave. Where are these sensors located on the side mirrors? I took a quick look but had to run in this morning.

Mine did this as a result of water ingress into the license plate lights ( i guess the wiring harness is somehow tied together)... ended up replacing harness, light, driver sensor, driver mirror, pass sensor. It was warranty so i didnt bother digging into how a light getting water in it causes so much havok, figure it was a short in the harness or something.

Mine did the same thing a few weeks ago. I had mine off for a few weeks and when I turned it on, it gave the warning. I searched threads about dirty mud packed sensors ( they are in the corner of the bumper caps).

All I had to do is leave BSM on with the irritating warning and ride the highway for about 15 min and the error went away. I leave BSM on now.

Thing is I never use that feature, Im old school with the little bubble mirrors, but I hate errors and warning lights. Puts my OCD on full tilt.

Mine just came out of the body shop for someone rear ending me. The green light doesn’t come on, and I have no warning on the PFD. I’m assuming the switch inside the truck is just a power relay and somewhere there is a loose connection? Any thoughts? What a pita

I had that problem and the sensor (left side) was bad. But you can also get that problem if the rear harness is unplugged at the body connector or obviously if it's unplugged from the sensor(s). If the rear end was just repaired I would check those connections. Inside wall of left frame rail just forward of the rear bumper/hitch and out at each sensor are the connections.

Do you license plate lights work?

simple is stupid. It was not connected under the left bumper cover. Thanks for having me start there. I need to drive in some traffic to see if it works, but at least it is powered now!

You bet. If they replaced the sensor(s) they are supposed to be aligned and calibrated by some drawn out, tedious procedure. Apparently it is necessary, though. I bought my truck used from a chevy dealer (trade in) and part of the deal was that they would repair the BSM that was inop. They gave up after 2 days of troubleshooting and sent it to my local Toyota dealer and paid the bill directly. When I picked it up I saw the work order/invoice I was surprised by how much they ate on the deal. $2900 for new sensors, calibration and labor. the labor for the calibration was $650 alone. As the FSM describes it, it's no simple task.

You can check the BSM back up alert by placing the truck in reverse and having someone walk from one side to the other, starting a good ways away. Mine has picked up pedestrians, shopping cart, etc, so it doesn't have to be another vehicle for the back up alert at least.

Is that harness the same harness that canopy wiring would get tied into? I had to take my canopy off the other day so they could do the recall on my third brake light and haven't had a chance to put it on yet. Been pouring rain today and the harness is exposed. When i left work the BSM system went haywire. I also have a bunch of mud under the right side of my bumper so it could be that. Kinda strange though as never had issues before with snow or mud so I'm thinking if it's the same harness I may have shorted something from the rain.
