I paid $220 to get mine replaced since my deductable was $200 I just paid cash. My insurance covers free fixes for chips and cracks smaller than a dollar, but mine got hit and cracked 2/3 across almost immediately.

On my way home today I had my windshield crack suspiciously along the bottom of the windshield (about 3 inches up), and it's right over the defrost vent. I was driving home in the snow, although, with the speed I was going. there was no snow touching the windshield. IT just cracked pretty much from one side of the vent to the other. Went to the dealer and they found suchs a small pit and claimed a rock hit it. MAybe, maybe not. The pit coild have been where the two cracks met and a piece of the windshield broke off. IT just looks suspicious to me. Cold air, warm deforster and the truck frame torgueing cause of the snow and 4 wheel drive. I'll probably hit the insurance unless someone knows of a TSB regarding this.

Mine did this a few weeks ago, though it was my fault. I was changing the windshield wipers and had taken the passenger one off when the wiper arm let loose and slammed into the windshield cracking it all to shit. Ended up paying like $300 to have it replaced. Yes, I paid out of pocket because of the $500 deductible. I did get PPG glass installed though.

Just noticed this thread.. Yes, a small rock chip can spread due to several factors. As mentioned moisture in the break area freezing and expanding, defroster creates heat which creates expansion, sun and temps over 78 degrees will do the same thing, hitting a bump in the road and the frame twist ever so slightly will also cause it to spread.. Many factors.. Glass is neither a solid nor a liquid. Its in a state of in between, and believe it or not is constantly in molecular motion. Take an old home 100 years or older and look and one of the original panes. it will be thicker at the bottom than at the top, because the "glass" is settling. So, sometimes it will just spread on it's own without any outside help.
Most repairs will run between $40-$75 depending on your location and the type of damage. Most full coverage insurance will pay 100% for the repair, exception is State Farm which stopped paying Mar.06.. Cracks up to 6 inches can generally be filled and stopped from spreading. Cost can vary on crack repair. Repairs may or may not be legal in your State, you would need to check with your Inspection Station. Massachusetts to my knowledge does not yet accept repairs, and Fla. will replace your windshield for free, Ark. does not have State Inspection so as long as its not imparing your vision to the point an Officer notices it, you are okay. . Any stone shot near an edge is more prone to spread than one out in the middle due to "flex" of the vehicle. Hope this info helps. And FYI, 90-04 models windshields run on average $180-$200 installed. Again depends on your location as the market varies across the US.. 05 windshields and up vary but in my area run about $250 installed and that includes new moldings.

The state of SC requires insurance companies to pay for windshield repair or replacement 100%

I've filed 2 claims on that in the past 3 years and my rates havent gone up either

1 time they replaced my whole windshield and the 2nd they filled with with some clear goo...im still using the repaired windshield and it hasnt spread at all and we go thru some pretty intense temp changes...like last week it was below 20* out and this week its pushing 70*

Keep in mind most Insurance companies use Safelite. From some of the things I have read Safelite glass isn't quite as good as PPG glass. That's why I ended up paying about $75 more having a place that uses PPG do it. Just my $.02.

Hot and cold extremes will cause a chip to grow into a crack, if you have a chip from summer and go into the colder months, when the temp is cold and the glass is cold, using your defroster will cause a crack to grow due to contraction and expansion. I see it all of the time.

As the insured, you have the right to choose any shop you want to do the work. They (the insurance companies) cannot dictate Safelite as that is known as "steering" and there are laws on the books that are against that.
