What I'm trying to highlight is that the forum has a cookie cutter assessment for everything.
The posts on this thread and on TW in general categorize snorkel use as:
    • Mall crawler. Who cares people do what they want.
    • "Cleaner air" eliminating some of the dust from trail. This helps a certain amount of people sleep at night justifying the snorkel for the few days a year the trucks on the trail. (unlike the australians).
    • Crossing the pacific ocean guys. The grand savants of TW will tell you the truck will sink before you can cross water deep enough for the snorkle to be useful. And dont forget all the other mods you need before you attempt that you big dumby! Come on now.
What is completely disregarded is it's most useful use, moderate water crossings and puddles. This is how people screw up their vehicles. Not the dust you collected on forest route 3402 last summer. The unexpected water suction through your stock intake when you created just the right splash into the upper wheel well. You don't need to be crossing the paficic for this to happen.
This is why I posted the picture.

    EDIT:
Maybe the rhetoric listed in bullet points is so popular because of the false assumptions people have about the snorkle. I guess it's prob the majority that visit the site

LED interior lights and chinese LED outside lights. Useful since the stock truck has crappy lighting.
CB radio is cheap and nice too if you have buddies.

I like your statements but I have one question=do people have a bigger chance of getting water in the air box via fender well or rain going down the snorkel tube? I don't think there is any way to prevent rain from being sucked down that huge pipe sticking up facing the forward position driving in the rain. I'm not trying to argue at all, I just don't see the logic in it.

    It's all about driving technique.

You can cross water easily deep enough to drench your carpet with a stock intake with proper technique. Fast enough to create a bow wake, slow enough you aren't splashing.

Snorkels definitely will give most people more piece of mind, though.

I was thinking the same originally.
The head of the snorkle has slits where it connects to the snorkle body (long tube). Rain water flows out of those when you're driving. I believe some air filter boxes have a hole in em at the bottom big enough to let some water out.
OBV there is a negative to that if you are in a prolonged crossing, but it is the DELTA , the amount of water you would get with and without a snorkle through a crossing. Big tube in water versus little hole. Would take a long time to be an issue.
That's why you should know how capable your system is. Low level water crossing, prolonged water crossing, flying through puddles insurance.

Yeah this is another TW thing. Everyone on here has proper technique. Boring. I agree with the satement but sometimes being serious serious all the time on trail is no fun. Also mistakes happen, would rather have the insurance.
Anyways we can talk about snorkle all day. My conclusion is they are more useful to me than the risk of inhaling a little dust that has to go through an air filter. You're talking continuous trail use to have it be a problem. But on the other hand you don't have to cross the pacific submarine style for it to be effective near water.
Sometimes you see a puddle or a mud pit and you send it. I'll take my chances with the "inadequate snorkle install".

EDIT: Sometimes I poke the water with a stick, sometimes I don't.
I guess that's the pros of owning a first gen, I won't have to sell a kidney if it sinks to the bottom.

Heres a picture of my airbox after i ripped out my fender liner to fit 35s before I put a snorkel on.

    20190406_101345.jpg

Maybe I should have driven underwater to rinse it out.

LOL!!! Yeah you should have driven it under water flush it out.
You are fricking kidding me. Dang, I didn't take a picture of my box but it was nowhere near that bad.
Surprised you didn't have weeds growing in there lmao.

Your intake box has a hole in it for drainage I see.

As far as Im concerned, with the (idiotic) way our stock air intake is set up and the way stt pros sling mud, a snorkel was a necessity.
