More parts... My knee crank was busted in transport years ago and I've been living with it... thought I might try welding/brazing it back together, but its also bent, and I was inspired to just make a new one. I'll weld these to either end of a piece of flat bar to get the offset.

I'm still haven't figured out to get the facing results I want, especially in steel... but overall pretty happy with this!

A little blending and then some paint and I'm going to have a knee crank again!

Thanks! I was pretty nervous welding it up. But I love how 1018 doesn't move much when you weld it, unlike stainless that seems to like to tie it self in to a knot. I actually had a pretty productive day restoring the mill - got a new chip guard on it, got ready to wire up my speed control, and started to work out how to get at the spindle. I think the little setscrew that keeps the R8 collet from turning is munged up and that's what's making collet insertion such a drag. It's unclear if I need to just take the nose cap off, or if I have to pull the whole spindle to get at it. Can't find any info on this old mill on the web or even through Jet. I was told the last guy who had any experience with it retired a year ago!

I'd love to have room for something like this. Sounds like a really fun project! I have access to toys at work, but having something in the garage would be killer.

PS - a few weeks in with the new coolant and I cannot believe I ever doubted... That 735 stuff SUCKED!!! I'm on Qualichem 250C and the machine is staying sparkly, no gooey residue, and no funny smells.

    Also, got this done:

Now on to the speed control!

Got distracted by the spindle which I finally figured out how to pull! Was also happy to find nice German bearings in there!

Wellllll…. Blew up my brand new speed control. turns out when they say for “115 v operation” they mean single leg at 115. Flips breaker… hears popping sound. Fuh.

    upload_2022-12-7_19-44-14.jpg

But I replaced the stupid pointed M4 x 32tpi (wtf???) setscrew that is buried in the spindle (required spindle removal and disassembly) that acts as a key for the R8 collets. I made a hand ground m4x0.7 dog point and that was good.

Should be a fun little project to experiment on

Tailstock for our 4th axis based off a 5th axis quick change pallet so its easily removable to get parts off a mandrel.

Thats a tough one if your trying not to drill new holes. Ive got all sorts of weird contraptions just for air guns because i hate drilling into the machine covers

Yeah, this lathe is so small there is only one place I can shoehorn the y axis scale, and the reader is going to have to hang off the back. It’s a little Janky but it’s going to work. Sadly I will be drilling a few holes.

Here's a cad shot of me overthinking the bracketry to mount DRO scales on my little lathe. Yeah, the scale pokes off the back of the cross slide by about 6". Yuck. The two dark gray parts are what I'm going to make. 1018 steel. Feels a little silly to put on a DRO worth more than the lathe, but... sure is going to be nice to have a Z scale that is not a) a multiple of .540 or b) only 1" long!

    Amazing machine
    20k spindle 90 tools
    Coolant thru

we also have an mx520 but its kinda stuck running production so never really get to play with it

I love my 5axis machines. Its kinda hard to go back to 3 axis or even want them. Im working the boss man trying to trade 2 of our aging 3’s for another 5 lol

    pushing a 18mm u-drill through this 40hrc 4140

with the dove tail setup this job went from 6 ops to 2 (plus the pre machine dove tail op)
As an added bonus the part comes out 95% deburred too

unfortunatly i cant show final product..
