Let me know how it works out for you. When we welded a lot of steel it was the best thing I ever learned. Cut out labor so much.

Holy cow this thing is a freaking beast. Spent today tweaking the vfd programing and discover I wired the motor for 480v instead of 220v got that fixed. I also got the backing plate for the belt made and installed.

This thing eats steel like its soft butter. I am very pleased with how it Performs, even with the loss that comes with the VFD and the single to phase conversion.

Now it's time to disassemble it and complete some cosmetic welding and grinding. And prep for paint.

Soon it will be time for the contact wheel and small wheel arms . Along with an adjustable tool rest arm for it.

Just found this thread, so I thought I would post a repair I just had done. Because Toyota will not replace my 2005 frame, I had to get the area cutout and welded to pass inspection. ( which Team Toyota, in my area, kindly advised me).
    From this:

    to this:
    IMG_2380.jpg
They primed, painted and undercoated the repair. I think it looks ok. Not a show truck, my DD that I want to keep as long as possible. What do Y'all think?

I think it looks great! I know you already know you are on borrowed time, so you will be checking the frame often.

I've welded on our frames. It absolutely sucks. Carry a bead? Forget about it! The rust is too randomly spaced!

They did great, I would think 5 more years and you can call it a win.

It is a 120 volt machine so there shouldn't be any reason you can't test it out. Bring your helmet and some scrap steel along, old mower blades work well.
Check out all the controls, if it works it will probably keep working. Hobart is a reliable brand.

Spent today cleaning up some of my welds, I wanted to fill in some of the voids and blend it all together to try an make it look like one piece. I got it looking fairly decent before I called it good enough for a workshop tool

I also got it all painted and reassembled . I used hammered antique pewter for the base. And D plate Hammered antique bronze for the arms and hunter green for a bit of color and it matches my bender stand.

It is usable as is... but needs a stand and a proper housing for the VFD and controls.

Looks awesome, but I can almost feel the skin burning off my hand looking at it. Please be careful! It's so tempting to try to hold that part just a little bit closer, or at just "the right angle" to get the rust off.

Don't take this as criticism. I'd love to have that in my garage. Nice work!

I’m no stranger to winging small parts all over the garage cause I tried to take too big of a bite on the belt sander. My fingers have paid the price as well. Tools like belt sanders tend to earn their respect fast when you first get one.

Those flying parts are called "Jeezus clips"...as in "Jeezus, did you see where that went?!".

I'm curious what the advantages are from that sander to this Craftsman. I have the Craftsman and use it a lot.

can’t speak for the OPs home made one but one big advantage to that style of sander is that on a lot of them you can change out the roller sizes to match the diameter of the tube you’re working with to get perfect notches.
