My gripe with face shields is I wear a nice set of bluetooth hearing protectors and safety glasses in most instances, and using the face shield usually requires me to use plugs instead of my over the ear muffs. Shit I even started wearing the muffs to mow the lawn just for the music even though my mowers not loud at all. Probably look like a total goober but fuck it's nice to listen to tunes while working.

haha, I usually wear ear muffs with basic ear buds underneath. No shame.

Whenever I’m in a t shirt and need to do some “quick” welding, I don’t put anything over my arms. 9/10 times I end up with a sunburn because it’s never as quick as I expect.

Thought my eyesight was getting shitty and saw the low battery light was on. Changed them out and suddenly I can see again. Almost like new glasses. LOL

I can top all you bitches!

Had to weld stake pockets on an 18' car hauler. Deck was at perfect height to sit on a roll around seat.

Hot AF in the shop. Wearing cargo shorts...only.

Nothing like sunburning your, ahem, inner thigh regions... you know, the parts that never see sunlight.

Alright, finally started on my 1/4” winch tray. Definitely seeing some undercut & overall just feeling like I’m a bit too hot but the pretty colors weren’t out of control like I’ve seen before. I also was joining an awkward seam here so maybe this was expected given the sharp edges of the pieces I was joining. Cut some gussets out of 1/4” plate with my angle grinder. Fun times. Also welded the skid bungs & tacked the ribs and bolt coins in there. Will do a test fit before I fully burn in the ribs. Tomorrow I plan to cut 2 more smaller gussets for the tray. Now that I look at the long seam on the winch tray it looks like too much wire speed no? This was my first time welding around pipe/tube. I can see that I should have made my groups a little tighter perhaps

Got started assembling my CNC table this weekend. I got the frame together, then stopped to build a dolly to sit it on.

I used 2"x 2" angle. I made a rectangular re-enforcement under the center section of the shelf because the water tank will be there. Roughly 130lbs. I used a piece of garage door opener chain rail for the rectangular support frame. That stuff is pretty strong for it's size, but needed some serious cleaning before I could weld it half way decent. Used Acetone and flap disc.

The expanded metal is tacked all the way around, across the center rails, and is the thicker variety. Probably going to sit my plasma cutter in under there too. I cut out the corners so the table legs were not sitting on exp metal.

I got to some small self levelling casters based on a recommendation on Langmuirs forum. I'm hoping I don't regret not going with larger wheel size. I usually like 4" wheels so they don't react to every little piece of crap on the floor.

I gotta get up the nerve to try and TIG the tray halves together. They supply sheet metal screws and sealer, but I spent the money to have a TIG welder, kinda feel :anonymous: if I don't try to weld it.

    20210918_135705.jpg

My welds are never appearance brag worthy, but on clean steel, I am decent. I've only had one weld fail, and that was on a ladder rack on a truck. I think that was more harmonic vibration induced from a long length of 1" tubing vibrating while driving.

Having poor eyesight sucks because I can never keep my glasses at the right angle for normal vs bi-focal vision. I mainly weld with my hands, not my eyes.

There is no reason you can`t bevel the joints.

Even more you can bevel and leave a gap for even better penetration pretty much the normal once the material gets thicker and depending just what your working on.

This comes with experience you know what needs to be done.

Settings can be a trail and error and at times need some minor adjustments to the point you no longer even notice when you make them.

If you feel you have a hard to weld joint move the weldment or your self to be more comfortable and be able to see.

Do you know that several of the hood manufacturers make "reader" lenses that slip in the hood right in front of the lens.

I was wearing readers, and it was a PITA moving my head to see out of the readers and see the weld. Once I got a cheater lens, I could easily see again.

If you haven't tried one, it's well worth it.

And, I am no expert, but your welds look great.

Then again some people don`t change the cover plates enough as the plate degrades slowly over time you never really notice.

    Good point.

Being a hobbyist, I need to remember to check mine. Not using it every day, I "assume" it will be fine whenever I grab it.

I've got a magnifier taped inside my hood. It definitely helps. It's mainly the headband vs the side pieces on my glasses that creates most of the problem.

Or, it could just be the fact that my eyesight is 20x800+ in both eyes, and I need bifocals for close up work . Those ain't sunglasses!

I just got this recently, the most comfortable and least distracting face shield I have ever used, less than $16 too.

I should keep track of how long have been using my tungsten before I bust out a new pack. The frugal in me hates to not use them until they’re too short to stay in place…

    Also the welding above. Goals!
