Yep all 3/8 and is doubled up towards the rear to beef up the recovery points and to capture the tow bar. Was only a few lbs heavier than doing the same thing with 1/4"

Loving my design with this one

You moved a bit fast and whipped in large movements, and because of that the weld laid a bit cold as shown by the edges

    upload_2024-5-6_7-57-17.png

You can move at the same speed as you did above, but with quite a bit more heat

The wall on that tube is thick, as is the chain loop there

Still, that thing ain't going nowhere as its solid

Even when you're running things well, don't be like me and run beads constantly

I had a few cold ones (like 2 or 3 yesterday) because my welder was getting warm running non-stop

Don't do much welding to justify a transformer based machine but I might still get one down the road :anonymous:

Another set of arms this week. Got a random surge of orders our of no where. Seems to happen every now and then.

Just remember it's no crime to say no. It's very easy to put the family in the background. You don't even know you are doing it.

    This.

It's easy to do, especially if you've got free time.

Recently had to tell a forum member no, even though the job would've paid well and he would've brought jacks and jackstands as needed.

But I need to spend time with my 1 year old so if it isn't a same day job, nope!

Multi day jobs I'll take on in the future, just not anytime soon.

Oh I know. These only take about 1.5hrs to do so I get them done before the wife even gets home. I already turn down the more custom jobs because they take too much time. Most of my orders are all stuff that I have stocked on the shelf that just gets shipped out. 2 sets of arms and a set of blocks in a week is alot of orders for me hahaha.

    Dino's are fun to do

I give a 3-5 day turn around on each one as they're made to order; then I suddenly had 5 orders within 3 days

I knocked them all out within a few days

    Fun stuff for sure!

Speaking of, don't have any welding jobs lined up for the next few days

Supposed to change the brakes on an SC300, but probably not until another week or two

Worked on an LS400 earlier today

Want to get the bumper worked on but I won't see that truck for another week or so, which leaves me at a standstill :burp:

Anyone got any cool projects going on?

Build thread in sig... 4-link long travel
can't remember if i posted these. been a crazy couple months working on back-halving/4-linking my '07, while also navigating our first child, now 6 months old.

from a welding standpoint, there's nothing too unique about the build, just a bunch of tube and plate. the only bit that's thrown me off was welding the bolt head capture plates and weld washers on to the link brackets. i tried the first two with a full height fillet weld. it was alright for the bolt head capture plate, but for the weld washers, even the slightest bit of cut into the washer made the seating surface of the nut very tight. didn't want to risk the nut overhanging the washer, so i switched to a much smaller fillet that didn't affect the surface area of the washer.

first time doing small welds. certainly a learning curve. 1/32'' filler rod was just making too big of a puddle no matter what i did, so i ended up using some .035'' mig wire. grain of rice for scale.

    weld washer side....

Saw this in Colorado. Its a lifted f350 dually. Not a fan of the truck but the bed was cool.

    I'll reiterate

I'm retired, but a stay at home dad!

The only issue when it comes to anything metal-related is not being able to pick up new steel for things my steel on-hand can't take care of. Reason being is I've got a 1 year old and my sources need me away from the vehicle in hard hat areas where I can't have my kid (and shouldn't)

Based on the many threads in this forum, seems many people put no effort in achieving it and suddenly one day they look underneath and it's nothing but rust
