It's awesome but at the same time it's like..man you become a little bit limited!

I take the little dude everywhere with me as my wife's at work Mon - Fri and being a teacher sometimes means she has to stay another half hour or more; at that time shops are closed by the time she gets home.

The weird part? Women being border-line creepy AF when a guy is out in public with his baby.

    Congratulations btw!

Yeah it's a pipeline setup. Most people don't paint the beds cause they just get ruined anyway and they swap the beds when they get a new truck so no point in color matching it.

This was in Colorado Springs but it had New Mexico plates. If you look closely, the welder in the back says Lincoln arc welding.

3G plate test with FCAW. This is the first open root plate test I’ve taken since 2010. Root came out great, still have to skim it with a grinder and put a pass on the backside

I admire the work each time these and your blocks pop up ... but I do wonder what vehicles these are for?

Heads up. Nobody open roots fluxcore ever. Mig root. Flux core rest of the way. Only time you use flux for the root is with a backing strap.

If i want to weld at home without spending tons of money, how can i get started?

What i would weld is i have this metal tube swing set that we have had for about 20 years. At times, the existing welds crack and we usually take the swing apart and bring it to a welder to weld it back on and it is good to go until the next weak point fails. We probably have done this 3-4 times a year in the past 4 years. I would like to learn and weld things myself if i can at home if it economically makes sense.

What else i would weld is probably make my own swing set if i bought the pipes and such.

    Ah gotcha

I've had to do those with either a 1/8" gap or 1/16" gap, same with the landings

Do it, welding stuff up for yourself is extremely rewarding.

Just depends on how much you want to allot for getting into it. Personally, I'd recommend getting into MIG over fluxcore for a beginner - fluxcore is wire you run without inert gas, but can be frustrating to get right for the novice, whereas MIG uses gas to shield the weld from oxygen, but has a higher initial cost (gas tank).

Also keep in mine, fluxcore-only welders can run fluxcore, but most times won't have an input for gas whereas MIG welders can run fluxcore and MIG.

Yea, it threw me off when this place said they open root test. Every plate test I’ve done since 2010 has had a backing strip. They even handed me a WPS to follow lol. I did a 6G MIG root and FCAW the rest last week, they still haven’t bent the coupons yet. Guess they don’t care too much since I already got the job

They just wanted to try and weed you out; last time I did a weld test for a job, the guy said I easily passed.

I told him I wasn't lying about my limited experience, but then he pulled out a weld test done by someone a week prior. The test was 18 gauge stainless and mine looked like it was years ahead in experience compared to the test he pulled; apparently the person that applied and failed the TIG test claimed several years of experience.

Yeah I've worked many places and never ever had an open root flux test. Seems strange.

The arms are for 95-04 5 lug Tacomas to convert to coilovers. Blocks are pretty universal but most of my customers have Toyota trucks. They've fit all the way from first gen Hilux's to 2nd gen 5 lug Tacomas.

Looks like i will be building a trailer soon..

the one place south of town has 4'x8' 16g crs for $74.41 with a $50 per shear cut charge. and the delivery charge is more than the cut price.

second best option is only a couple miles down the road, an it's 4'x10' 16g crs for $130 delivered or a $20 per/ shear cut charge

    God damn

So the place I was getting a lot of my steel from, would toss it on the shear himself and just slice what I need; unfortunately their insurance company wanted to put a stop to 'non-employees' going in the shop (for obvious reasons) so I kind of stopped going there.

The place I buy my new square tube from has great pricing on square, round, angle, etc. But that's exactly what they charge for shearing steel plate as well, $50 with a 2-3 day turnaround.

The place I quoted from that you copied in your replies, sells their square, round, and angle for a few dollars more, but runs their cuts at $5 per shear on steel plate.

I'm chalking this up to their client-base. The one that charges $50/per sells to everyone, but has major accounts with a lot of businesses they work with. Every time I go there, there's always multiple trailers in the parking lot.
