Its pretty rare that I get to weld 'thick' stuff at work. This project im working on now has me welding a decent amount of 5in schedule 10 stainless and flanges. Good fun :)
Edit: no rotary or positioner. Freehand

Is it just me or have steel prices stayed the same or gone down? 1.75 DOM is $6 a foot when its usually 8-10.

Whole new meaning to birdshit welds

I've ordered a few rounds of DOM the last 12 months for my truck, and they've definitely gone down a little bit each order. I've seen less change in square tubing and plate though. could be a regional thing though....

Started the stainless exhaust project off by first converting my turbo back housing to a vband.

Bolted it to some rectangle tube that I use to make blocks so I can align it with the blade in the band saw. Worked out pretty damn well, got a super flush cut.

Then I beveled the housing to match up to the vband. Preheated the cast housing and welded the stainless vband on using supermissile filler. After it was done I wrapped it in a welding blanket let and left it in a cooler over night.

my first inclination is that they just layered tack welds. sure, it could be a figure 8 pattern, but they clearly already cut corners with the dual-1/4" shackle stack where a single 1/2" of material would work perfectly fine and save them a weld bead.

i mean, what kind of company cuts corners on material, then goes all extra on the weld pattern? the time cost of the weld pattern likely far exceeds the BOM of contracting out some laser-cut 1/2" shackle mounts.

only real way to know is to cut it apart.

Slightly doubtful it's tack stacking. You would see the little dot towards the middle at least a couple times in there. Looks like mig that's done with a pause, and then very quick go, so that there is still a puddle in between but filler weight is minimized. European car racers and manufacturers seem to like that technique and use it on racecars here and there for things like gussets on door bars that are strong enough without the gusset or the gusset functions mechanically in compression and just needs a weld to hold it in place or keep it from bowing. I guess the goal is a little extra reassurance or to not leave stuff plain unwelded/tacked but still pick up the ever so slight weight savings.
My truck is like swiss cheese from all the stuff i've done to save some weight, and i do a manually pulsed cover pass on a lot of my welds i do for a living, but even to me the strategy seems a bit goofy because those gaps/valleys added to the profile of the bead basically all become potential stress risers in the haz zone of the welds. Not saying i know better than some rally car developers and brands like Porsche that have used the process, but not sure it's a move i'd make

Could also just be shit welds but that's the closest real process i know of that's comparable to what those welds look like

You should weld the inside as well. Basically without full penetration on that weld from the outside, that entire inside bit is a crack that is already half formed. That's not good without the amount of heat cycles it's likely to see. +better airflow too. The sharp edge will create a lot of drag and turbulence

That setup looks more dangerous than regular ol welding. Grounded to the clamp that's clamped directly on the joint. Welding wood on top of carbon fiber reinforced plastic. Dudes gonna be on fire and breathing in ridiculously toxic fumes in no time

Looks like a huge waste of time.

I want to see the weld cut to view penetration, which I'm thinking is not much.

I know that weld was not specked by an engineer.

I could give 2 shits about stacking the plates to make it half inch. That's a common occurrence. I do it all the time.

added 3 front crossmembers to my trailer for overall rigidity.

this is what 4 pounds of welding wire looks like...

i really need to upgrade my welder-- i've looked to converting from the 2 pound spools to 11 pound spools, but there's just no great way to do it that doesn't end up being really hacky and damage-prone(i'd need to add an enclosure 'butt' to the welder to hold the spool, which would double it's size). but part of me wants to finish this project out with it just for the ridiculousness of it.
