Bumper complete. Overall pretty happy with it being my first welding and metal work project, fit is not perfect, and some of the welds are not the prettiest, but I learned a ton and will take that knowledge to the front that I will start on next.

I was able to retain the spare mounting system, it sits on the welded in crossmember in the rear, and while I wont wheel with a tire mounted down there, it will work for road trips, and it will fit inside for offroad adventures until I build a hitch mount tire carrier, and eventually add a swingout to the bumper itself. Plus I could probably fit like a 37" bogger down there LOL, the limit being the width inside the frame rails which is 39" IIRC.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
Yeah it's crazy how quiet it is i like running spray arc on long flat welds so much quicker.

so i need some help here....
i can weld just fine.... but the second i go upside down and weld, it sucks!! cant even lay a bead, shit spattering everywhere.
what are some tips for welding upside down?

my welder tells me what voltage and wire speed to run on certain thicknesses. im running 7 on the voltage and 6.5 on the wire speed.
it is a snap-on that runs on 110, not sure of the amps.

i dropped the voltage to 3, and the wire speed down to 3, but it didnt really do anything.
messed with it with no luck..... i really need to weld upside down.. help! haha

Sounds like it's probably stick out or gun angle

I don't try to carry a bead. I just do long spot welds. Really just 1/2" welds, stop, then move to the next sections. You will have more buildup in the cup/tip area.

ill check out the link when im not at work. thank you.

    stick out??
it could be the gun angle as i am at weird angles.

i actually do that too usually, sometimes a bead. but i cant even get it to start to weld. (if you know what i mean) it immediatly starts spattering everywhere not even allowing me to get a weld started

actually my work didnt block the link, i think its a combination of gun angle and stick out.

sometimes i think i have it too hot because molten metal drips off sometimes.
then other times the wire almost deflects from the metal.

    will try tonight! thank you!!

Is the metal clean? Sounds like you are welding on a dirty surface, when upside down it will just roll right off

    it is clean.. well was
but i noticed if you weld a little and stop, the metal is all dirty again. what else can you do besides keep going?

it doesnt sound like your problem but i always turn the wire speed up and keep the heat the same when i go to over head, and i turn the gas flow up to 30 cfm.

but based on your problems it sounds like you need to use a different manipulation and change your gun angle

I had the same issu working on my bumper mounts that are welded to the frame, dropped some nice molten tears on myself. Ended up getting it done, but they sure weren't pretty.

So I took the day off yesterday and apparently the CNC fairy stopped by the shop to drop of a new, to use, 5x10 plasma table:headbang: Not sure on the details, just saw a hypertherm 1000 sitting next to it then had to buggy to an install, no time to even look at it:(. I won't get a chance till monday but I've got some design ideas I've been wanting to try.

Here is an overhead weld I did yesterday. Had to replace the tongue on a utility trailer. You can see the stop/start methods I spoke of.

You got that right. After a coat of paint, it doesn't matter. All I care about is good penetration.

I was just trying to show my style of overhead, mig welding.

Man I wouldn't trust that weld. Pretty much all you did was tack weld it a couple of times. Especially on a trailer that will have weight on it. If that broke on the highway...
