Question for you welders. I was attempting to weld two 55gal drums together this weekend to make a grill/smoker. It kept burning through the steel no matter what settings/angles/push-pull combinations I tried. Whats the trick?

Best I could get it was pushing the puddle trying to keep the arc away from the hot area. Seemed to do better but I was still making holes. I have a Miller 211, 75/25mix. I have similarly had issues with 1/8" steel corner joints.

The 211 is new to me... i started many years ago with a cheap flux core, went to stick, then tig. Now im back to mig and having issues :goingcrazy:

Probably have to do a manual pulse method, allowing the weld puddle to cool to prevent burning through.

I did try that as well, helped but at times it just burnt right through... im guessing it was too hot on those attempts.

You need to make sure the tube isnt slipping. The manual one does not have anti kick back or whatever its called so when you pull the arm back to set the pin in the next spot on the die make sure you push on the tube and hold everything tight.

I also cut a tube and used it between the tube you're bending and the bolt that tightens to hold it, that way you can really tighten it down and not worry about nicking your tube up

That's awesome, I thought about trying to do something like that when I built my bumpers, but decided that getting it leak free was going to be a PITA. Do you know about how much volume you have?

    I'd do this. ^

Once you've set up the tube in the bender and tightened the bolt, it almost always needs more adjustment. I haven't had much of an issue with nicking up the tubing (for lack of caring or otherwise. ) but make sure you tighten the bolt again AFTER you've applied some pressure on the tube/started the bend, as the tubing will have a chance to settle into the tube keeper strap thingambobber. At this point is where I also 'zero' the degree/angle indicator gauge thing. The whole setup needs some pressure on the tubing to be settled in properly. I've had great accuracy/repeatability doing so.

And FWIW, that anti-kickback pin is worthless, IMO. It tended to cause a lot of jamming and I removed it early on and never looked back. The additional ratchet/lever seems more than adequate for preventing kickback.
