    Any idea's why the spoolgun would arc back to the tip instantly? Like the whole length of stickout gone as soon as it arced.If I kept it going it would get some spray on the material but as soon as I stop the tip would fuse... and this mess happened. Was about 3/4" away. If I tried lower power it would just pop and arc. Miller 211, spoolmate 100

    check your plug. You may have lost one of the 120v legs. Its happened to me twice. Trying to push that many amps thru 1 leg will vaporize the tip.

    If not that, your heat and speed is way off.

    Relentless Armored! Too many others to list.
    Make sure it's feeding consistent. If it's binding it'll spray like that and burn back as if there is high voltage or extremely low wire speed

    Anyone hiring someone for some tig welding or know anyone who is? Or stick ?

    Anything is better than this boring and repetitive brainless welding we do here lol.

    Flat flux core. On the same groove. On the same poles. Every day. All day.

    I need something thats a little more mentally challenging.

    Not sure what you expected as a production welder. Most weld shops make many of the same or similar part. It's going to be boring unless you're in a custom fabrication shop.

    First and foremost, figure out what you want to do and determine the steps you need to do to make it happen...

    I know the refineries in my area are usually hiring; my friends that are pipe welders do well - but it's a constant commitment.

    Stick it out. It looks pretty shitty if you have 3 different places of employment within your first year of being a professional.

    Save your money.

    Don't buy needless shit.

    If you decide to purchase equipment on your own, being able to provide a nice down payment and a positive credit score will reflect very highly on you. I've got all of my equipment paid off (~5k), just through using my head (hood), it's a pun.

    The shipyards/small independent guys in Alaska actually get to do some interesting work. It's far different work than burning tanks out of a ship down on the canal... That sucks.

    Yea I know. I took the job cause it was a for sure job lined up after school.

    So now I'm just looking around to see if I can get closer to the welding I enjoy.

    Make sure that you can walk the walk before you talk the talk!

    Yea I know the speech about sticking through things.

    I just hate flux core so bad :frusty:

    Its not pretty, its smokey and involves zero skills

    I just feel like I'm waisting my time when I could be welding with stick or tig stacking dimes or walking cups.


    I'm not gonna quit or anything but I'm just trying to see what I gotta do to go up this ladder I'm on rather than get stuck on the first floor with everyone else.

    It's hard to try and focus on improving your talent when you know that it's not going to happen where you're at... I've been there.

    Especially when it's pretty clear that you're never going to get above step 2 on the ladder.

    I'm sure you could be the best TIG welder in the world, and it wouldn't matter at all where you're at. I'm sure a lot of your co-workers are totally fine with slogging into work in the morning and shutting their brains off, then getting a check on Friday.

    You don't seem to be that way.

    I can't speak with much experience of the welding industry; but I'd imagine just like everyone else, you've got to pay your dues.

    Then maybe take the leap and go out on your own.

    I wouldn't trade being self-employed for anything in the world.
