But anyways yea I get 2-3 days off from work every week. And I have been thinking about buying a diesel for a while now since the taco isn't the most ideal daily driver anymore anyway.

So yea, buying the truck isn't solely for the purpose of being a mobile welder. So there's no loss there if o don't get work.

Then the SA200 ... the only generator welder I have is my dads old Lincoln that's too old and small to burn 7018's over head lol. And its his machine. So I was needing to get my own machine anyway. So with the machine, not a loss if I don't get work either.

As for work, my family knows about every ranch in the county. So gonna tell me grandpa to ask around if any of his friends need anything built or repairs done on their fences, pens, gates, etc.

Also probably gonna post a small ad on the feed store and hardware stores bulletin boards.

Thing is, we work a swing shift at work where one week is 3-12' and the next week is 4-12's. And we CAN go in on our days off for overtime but Q's rather spend time trying to get my own thing going on the side and get some more experience with other things. So yea. Not going as balls deep as y'all think I am with all this lol.

I doubt you're on the welders world Facebook page, but there's welders for sale in Texas pretty often. 42cedb2ee27211a8385789c8e80fdca1_474cbcdcd23e8c0f246c6a0ec201256bfc35680d.jpg

Cracked my TC spindle gussets, just re-weld, or sign of a bigger issue? Is this common? Shitty weld? I was thinking of adding a gusset down to the tie rod arm as well, similar to the sway bar version.

Although it looks like the failure happened on the gusset side, was the proper pre-heat and post cool/Ni filler metal procedure followed when these were welded on?

Those welds do not look very sound, either.

I would say a whole new set of spindles, IMO.

The overall integrity has already been compromised.

I did pre-heat and slow cool them, as you said the failure is on the gusset side, would the treatment on the cast section affect the gusset as well?

Yeah, not super proud of those, they were hard to reach with the nozzle, the rest of the welds look better, checked the rest of the spindle and they look good.

I guess it depends on how much the spindle moves without the gusset. If the spindle flexes during normal driving/wheeling then the failure comes from trying to stop that movement with an inadequate brace. The brace is going to be the failure point in that situation.

So, which direction of movement caused the failure? That's the question. If it's shock loading from the tie rod, then your extra gusset may help some. I say some, because the gusset doesn't brace the spindle in the direction the tie rod forces are coming from. In fact, I don't know why they would add that gusset in the first place.

It should be pretty easy to weld that gusset up again though. If it were me I'd use a cutoff wheel and open up the crack. Lay in a nice hot bead and go with it. If something else breaks later on then pick up a new set of spindles. Just my opinion.

Thanks, that is kinda want I was thiking and planning to do as well.

I would think it is from the spindle pivoting/flexing down and putting that spot into compression/flexion at that joint. I think it is a shitty weld, but being stressed excessively at that spot. In ding some research, others have cracked theirs there as well.

I'm not a certified welder by any means. I just learned from the guys at work. But here's some stuff I did at work the other day. Just patching up some paddles.

Yeah, I'd imagine that you should be okay. I don't know much about these gussets, but it seems like there's a little debate about the overall design behind them.

Seems like most of the guys weld them without removing the spindle from the truck. Which, quite frankly I take as being asinine. Most of the install pictures feature less than passable welds as well. Sounds like you're on the right track with doing the proper pre-heat/post-heat and the fact that you had them off to weld them initially.

They're forged, rather than cast. That being said, I'd look for a new set if any further cracks appear.

    Good luck!

Anyone here need a spool gun for a Miller? I've got a 3545/3035 that I'd let go for $350 shipped. Bought it to go on my 251 thinking it was direct connect but it isn't. Fits most Miller's with a sga100 adapter, and direct connect to a few machines.

Interesting read; way more management than what I'll need.

    Side note:

Just spoke to a good friend that's having some major refit work done at a yard in Dutch Harbor. He's been having a lot of issues with the weld crews, mostly due to the fact that the yard was recently sold to another parent company - and most of the prior welders quit.

The new welding foreman was on his boat this morning, attempting to finish some welds on an aluminum wave wall. He couldn't get the spoolgun to function - dicked with his suitcase - called the other crew members idiots - then finally slammed his spoolgun on the deck of the boat and proclaimed that he wasn't going to be able to finish the job without purchasing a new one in the morning...

My friend picked it up and loaded the wire correctly and finished the job in about 30 minutes.

Helps when you've got the wire feeding the right way...

IIRC, the 211i uses the same proprietary DIN as the 252 - so I don't think it'd work for me.

    If it'll function on a 211i - then I may be interested.

Did you ever get my PM regarding parameters on that machine?

No kidding. I was amazed by the level of detail. I suppose if you're doing a huge amount of production work, it might be useful. Could it have been useful in the spindle example above?
