Strike one for the new tubing bender. The shop bought all pipe dies! I wired it up and ran it today. It will bend pipe, but trying a piece of tuning in a one size down die doesn't work. It just flattened it out.

The fit and finish on the machine leaves a lot to be desired as well. Had to slot a hole in the follower carrier because the drilled and tapped holes don't line up.

The guys enjoy it. It's a solid 3 days of tig by multiple guys to fully weld and grind one of these up. We have 15 more coming down the line soon.

Lol I just fired 2 welders last week. One dude was caught sleeping inside one of the hoppers with a torch in his hand like he was welding. And he came in drunk one morning. Ballsy.

We were hiring, but we mainly hire through a temp agency so we can fire people easily. It's amazing how hard it is to get good help. I have 4 guys that get almost as much done as we did with 6 guys. And I don't have to hear the bitching anymore. I'm not sure if I'm going to hire another guy or not.

It's negative 6 degrees right now here in Minnesota, so it might be kind of cold driving around with half doors...

The best part about designing is seeing it come to life. I also do all the cnc mill and laser cutter programming, so I have my hand in everything from design to assembly.

Does anybody have any pictures of 1.75 tube that was bent with a JD2 model 3 bender? Does it flatten it out much or kink past 90° on the 180° die?

shouldnt hardly flatten at all, dies are tight tolerance. And no kinking should be present so as long as a appropriate radius die is used for the wall thickness(they list min wall in the die specifics). Ex, .06 wall tube might kink but the .09 and thicker is usually good to go.

Thanks for your input. I'm looking into buying the model 3 but my dad is old school and says that style bender doesn't work.

I've used the equivalent competetor (ProTools 105 series) for 5 years in my shop and never had any issues. Sure there are other benders that work cleaner and more efficient but they cost 10's of times the cost of the basic draw benders like the model 3 and 32, the protools 105/brute, or JMR's cost. A bender isnt for everyone, but having one at your disposal sure is cool!

I think you just made up my mind. I'm sure my dad will be borrowing it all the time if I get it.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, one recommendation I can give is to set it up air/hydro or full elec/hydro because the manual bending gets old quick. Takes a lot of effort and requires the bender be fully bolted to the floor, when it's hydro you can make a rolling cart and put it where you need it for a project then roll it back in the corner when done.
The Swag air/hydro kit wont break the bank too bad either for someone on a budget.

I love my model 3 been using the same one for 10 years. The air/hydro setup is a must and it's cheap. The swag setup is very nice. I just made my one with scrap I had at the shop.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely be looking into the air/hydro setup if I get it.
