Wow It has been so long since I learned to do a 1/8" open root that I run on auto pilot just from muscle memory

Just what code do you need to qualify for ??

    You should know .

6010 vertical is being a PITA, I can't get the timing on the whip correct.

A fellow student and I are starting to take side jobs, he will be the main welder, but I have most of the equipment and a better place to do it, and he also wants me around because he doesn't understand structural stuff as well as I do, got our first customer via the school shop today, job is scheduled to happen Friday morning.

The other guy thought of business cards, so I may be getting some like this with contact info on the back.
    image.jpg

Our instructor is telling us to go for it, he has confidence in our abilities and our town needs a good welding company to handle the small jobs and evolve into a profitable shop.

Sounds like you're over thinking the whip. There's no specific pattern or timing to go by. Its more or less how you feel the weld. It sounds crazy but you just gotta find something that works. Left, right, up. Left right up. Left right up lol.

I probably am, on flat I was able to time it with a simple 1-2 count, but only one time has a vertical weld look "right" to our instructor, my biggest thing is staying in the puddle to long and coming to far back down with the whip.

They don't look near as good as that, I'll get some pictures tomorrow at class.
Your vertical look very similar to my flat.

Well post some pics when you can so we can help. You can almost always tell what's going on wrong with a picture of the weld.

    Will do.
My instructor us very good at correcting what's wrong, but whenever I get the time in puddle and whip correct I'm inconsistent on travel speed and arc length, it's just gonna be one of those things where it takes a while for it to "click" but once it does it'll be easy.
Last semester it took me ~4 weeks to get horizontal flux core right, but once it did it was simple.

Just be very careful having your equipment and shop being used these start ups have a habit of getting real ugly even with the best of intentions.

Have you figured on the failure of a capital equipment item??

    Looked into insurance ??

Best of Luck in any case.

    Definitely gonna be careful.

Not really, the MIG machine we'll be using is less than a year old and it's had less than 20lbs of wire run through it, and we maintain it.

I need to get new leads for the miller blue star, but I need to make sure it runs right first.

Not really, if we get more jobs then we will.

So. Much. Welding lol. Yes theres a crack and couple nonfused spots. We were filling in cracked spots on a wheel. Some chunks of steel had worn out and broken off over the life of the wheel and we were welding it the wheel back to being balanced for the most part. This was 4 layers of beads using some weird cast iron 1/8" rods. Think the rod said 646 or something similar on it. uploadfromtaptalk1441920877266.jpg

Practice practice. Stop trying to "time" it and watch the puddle. You should be able to watch it fill it and know when to move bases on how the puddle is reacting and flowing, not based on any kind of time figure

Only use the numbers of the current control to get you close !!

In my day all we had was a dial and a arrow pointing up .

So many get into a bad habit of trying to use the same setting then when they have problems the get frustrated .

Conditions change all the time .
