I only have about 3 months shop xperience with fluxcore and this job is my first field experience with it. These gaps and fitment is killing me lol.

Getting the rest of the parts I need to finish up the bluestar 2E and getting ready to mount it to the trailer.
I shouldn't have an issue mounting the battery on the trailer (Instead of the welder) and running the start leads to the battery should I?

I want to just use the one battery for starting the welder and running LED lights (gonna build some using pod LED's), and have it hooked to the trucks charging system (Via 7 pin connector) to maintain charge if I don't use the welder enough.

Wow. Our welders would just laugh and walk away (while laughing) at that and tell the boss no way in hell they are welding that. Then tell the shipfitter to go back and try again lol.

I cant remember exactly what the spec is (been awhile since ive dealt with it) but anything over a 1/4" and the welders can shut it down. Thankfully the welds usually work with us and will weld up to about 3/8. Course being short on nuclear stuff is a hassle so they work a bit closer with the fitters.

But like anything we work to Mil-Specs and requirements so bit different than other industries.

Believe me. I wanted to bust heads but the fitters have 5+ years experience in this field and I have... 9 months. And I didn't wanna be a typical welder cry baby so I just worked with it but the difficult part was planning the passes. Like the top part would be 2 stringer small weave passes to me while the bottom would be one weave. But it all needs to look uniform when finished so it was taking forever to do 10" of weld. Repeatedly.

It all pays the same but dang it gets frustrating when you're used to dealing with WPS and gaps in spec.

Weird something like that for the 5+ year ship fitters and the fitters would be getting a good talking to and then told to go fix it lol. Even on the non-nuclear side that wouldnt fly. But i suppose thats just cause the tolerances for government are a bit tighter.

One hting i learned before my new job is to never piss the welder off as he can save quite the headaches! had a couple welds he saved a some explaining and headaches just by welding a *cough* bit of a big gap.

I remembered to look at my machine on Thursday when I dropped by class, I weld with a 350MP (the 256 is in the next booth), but I think it's an older model because the teacher said he hasn't gotten any new machines in the last few semesters.

I don't really like how many different settings it has, seems overly complex for what it needs to be.

I hope you get years of use out of your set up.

Boilermaker here checking in. Not a welder, just one of those dirty evil (ship)fitters you all like to cuss about. (but a nice one)

I spent the last 3 days at work prepping an insert on one of our dry docks so the welders wouldn't cry too bad when we hand it off to them :)

Thats garbage, wheres your QC? Your boss?
Are you letting the welders fit? :D

Its time for you to grab a dog and a wedge or a hickey stick and make that right.

 nope! The fitters are tacking tho... And yea I'm just stacking welds to cover the gap and get fusion. Ima spend some time grinding after its finished and try to clean it up. QC doesn't check till job is finished usually and boss just trust the fitter.

So I'm new to welding and I'm currently taking classes at the community college and figured I won't get anywhere doing it only once a week for 4 hours. So I thought I'd look into buying my own. I've been lookin at either the millermatic 211 or the power mig 210. Any pointers would be awesome. Also can you set up for stick with the millermatic? THANKS!

I learned to TIG stainless in about 4 hours with no welding experience, so there is that. Make sure welding is something you like doing before you go spending a bunch of money.

Ask your teacher if you can get in any other nights to practice??

So places and teachers let you if they have the space.

Don't buy a machine if you're new to it. Jumping in over your head IMO. Just ask to come in during other times to practice more.

So easy to teach yourself bad habits that take forever to break.

If you can teach yourself to weld and have passed all the certs in that process to ASME section 9 codes you have my praise.

It has it`s place in production welding But myself I don`t care for it

I do like a dual shield wire but it can be a pain at times to get dialed in just perfect
