You'd have better luck if you cleaned that plate with a stainless wire brush before welding...

    that was my reaction

yeah, major tig fails. my engineering materials class made a trip to the machine shop yesterday to "learn" about welding. after the demo and talk on how/why welding works, everyone got to try. i expected the welds to suck since it was so dirty and i don't believe any of my classmates have welded before, but i didn't think it would be that horrible. that's 5 attempts by 5 different people......

i don't know the settings though since the shop manager had set it all up and dialed it in before we got there.

and yeah, just about everyone pulled a full body circut completion :D they only had so many hoods, so i wasn't watching, but the screams were funny to hear.

if you want to weld 1/4" and 3/8" pretty often, 220 is the way to go. If its all going to be lighter stuff then a 110 will do.

Also keep in mind you might have to install a 220 outlet in your garage if there isn't one already.

The outlet that you plug it into. If you're going to plug into a standard wall outlet, you want a 110v welder. If you have 220v service where you'll be working, the higher voltage welders are capable of welding thicker material in a single pass and can grow with your skill level.

Considering your response I'm going to assume it's 110v service.

I use a Hobart Handler 140 that I purchased from Amazon. It's a great machine, uses a Miller gun to make finding replacement tips and consumables easy, and comes with the hose and regulator for gas shielding if you decide to go that route. All you'd need to do is pick up a bottle and hook it up.

Okay this is great information. Im probably just going to use the welder to build a basket and maybe a bumper. Correct me if im wrong but the 110v sounds like it would be sufficient. Thanks again for the input!

A unit capable of either 110 or 220 would be the bee's knees. There are several models out there that can do that. If you'd have to go to a lot of extra work to install 220 service in your garage, then I wouldn't worry about 220.
