Anyone here have experience with CNC mills?
I've been looking into them lately and they seem pretty cool, but how TF does the mill know where on the workpiece it is indexed?

I don't have much experience with mills, but I have an old bridgeport at work with a DRO. I just touch an x y z on the part I'm making and zero out that point. I reference all my dimensions from that point. For example it could be the top edge of a plate. The newer stuff I don't know how to work, but they can have a gauge that touches the parts. Basically a million ways to go about it. Also depends on the mill.

I started a Machinist BS thread on here to ask questions too.

Work piece is located by the Work offset like G54, G55, and so on until G59.

Conversational controls all have their own way of doing the same basic thing.

So basically you lower the bit, measure from the edges and then tell the computer program that in that current position the bit is a certain distance from each corner?

Cool, I just found it and subbed.

    Ok, interesting.

For setting the work offset you can:

Use an edge finder for the XY locations and use a tool to touch off Z locations.

    Use a 3D Gage

    Use a Probe

Or just eyeball it if it's something that doesn't matter

This video showed me how, right around the 11:00 mark, I don't know why I didn't think it would be that simple.

Help. Tell me what's wrong. Gun angle or holding the wire at the edge too long?

Looks like gun angle to me and possibly too fast travel speed, that bottom welds I see some undercut.

    Need more wire speed.

    My non-expert opinion.

You might have been more specific what you were talking about .

The bottom weld looks like you welded it last after you cooked all the water out and got the weldment just to hot

Look at the HAZ (Heat effected zone) on the bottom compared to along the weld on the right side it was just to hot

things can be to hot or to cold sometimes things need to cool down .

Ends like that get heat soaked quite easy.

Wire speed if I go up it kicks back if that makes sense. Self taught and trying to get my welds better. Never had anything fail but visual is my biggest problem. Machine is a Lincoln 175hd on gas, and that was welded on c and speed between 3 and 4

I think they look fine. Maybe just a tad too much heat. That or increase your speed.

I don't like to stop when welding, just one smooth, weld. On the plus side, doing it your way reduces burn thru.

welding the outside of sheet steel joints is always hard to control heat. I cheat and weld the inside and grind the outside down.

Gotta do a vertical T-bar for a job test, and if they like that then I get to do 2G, 3G and 4G plates (I think) with an X Ray test.
All in aluninum, anything to be cautious of? Gonna go back to school next week and run some aluminum to get back in practice.

I've only used the spool gun for a few passes on a 2G T-bar my first semester, didn't like it so I learned to tig aluminum instead (not very well, but enough to get by) of dealing with the spool gun.

The golden rule if you make a defect you fix it.

I am sure you know Clean Clean Clean !!

Make a few trail passes without output to make sure the cables are not going to get hung up at the worst time.

Being Comfortable is half the battle the other is being in position to see the joint.

Which should have been pounded into your head
