Made a headache rack today for the truck. Was using my dads older miller matic 300, kelpt having issues with gas. Almost every weld that was more then an inch, gas would quit then start, thus leaving a 1/2" section that looked like shit and had to be ground out and re welded. Almost the same as working outside in the wind, like the gas would be blown away, but I was in a glosed garage and it did it the whole day..

All in all I got the rack done, now I need to figure out the welder situtation..

I tried, pulled the linear out and checked it, put it all back in and did the same, even changed the bottle. Was hoping its something I could fix myself, the nearest shop I know of that repairs welders is about 2hrs away.

The headache rack looks pretty damn good

Are you sure you had the gas valve all the way open? Plenty of gas in the tank? No drafts in the shop? I guess the only other thing it could be is the gas valve solenoid.

what do you guys think about this welder? is it worth it? it wouldnt be used for anything too thick. but might be used to weld 1/8 in which is what it says its limit is. I dont have any experience welding which is why i want a cheaper welder to learn. are there any welders that i should look out for used?

also what would you recommend to cut with for a beginner?

Thanks man! As far as I know everything checks out, I been a working at a local fab shop as a welder for 5yrs now. I can usually back track issues pretty quick but this seems to be inside the machine and I have no clue how to go about troubleshooting that.

Usually, if it's not something in the torch and you have good pressure...it's something to do with the solenoid. Just seems weird that it's consistently intermittent. Sucks that help is so far away too.

Well the torch checks out, everything seems correct, pressure is fine. Ill just take it to the repair shop when I get a chance, it still fuctions, just a pita to work with and impossible to make clean beads. Thanks for the solenoid tip

Got my Hobart 187 from Amazon. Paid $600 with free shipping. They sell for more like $800 plus at the welding shops. Hobart is owned by Miller, and from what I understand is just a Miller in a Hobart box... I have had mine for a year now, done quite a few projects with it, and it works great! Perfect welder for the home fabricator IMO.

Built an amp rack, i can post more pictures later.

I built it to hold my two amps without cutting the storage tray, and it bolts to the truck so pretty hard for theft

Started (two cups for upper bolt holes in storage tray)

I added another one for the third bolt and re-enforced all mounting locations.

I just made these on nikeid and waited a month for them to get here :/ I don't buy shoes often so I don't mind paying a lot for them since I expect them to last 2+ years..it sucks getting holes in $140 shoes! :( oh well lesson learned
