Because NOW is when I have some free time...Football season starts soon and that will consume weekends, and it isn't so hot up here in the hills of East Tennessee.

While I would like a plasma cutter, and a big GMAW Machine, say like the Hobart Iron Worker 185, I would have trouble justifying the purchase.

And I also have to wonder of using a cut off wheel instead of a torch would save time over cutting and grinding!

Us 3rd semester students (pipe) are in the shop while the teacher is doing book work with 1st and 2nd semester.
Ran a little bit of TIG on some steel, er70s-2 filler rod with 120 amps.
Pretty happy with it for my first TIG beads in about a year.

I do use Cut off wheels quite often anything that I can do quick

I don`t use Grinding discs much anymore just Ceramic flap discs for blending

Hey, welding is something I have always wished I knew how to do. I'm maybe 2-5 years from retirement and am planning for the tinkering years. I have everything I need for wood working but not metal. I would just like to be good enough to weld part A onto part B and have it be strong and at the correct angle. Is this something that I can read about and learn on my own or should I take a welding class at the school? Is a 120VAC 20A circuit going to work or will I need to wire 240VAC in my garage for a decent welder? Will I need to learn how to use a cutting torch also?

One of those things Myself I say take a class or two get the basic theory .

Then figure out if you really enjoy welding or it just plane is not for you.

One can pretty much weld what ever you need to with a 120 VAC welder running .023 solid wire.

Sure it would not be real fun to rebuild the bucket above but I could do it.

Sure if you have the room in the panel a 50 amp plug can run just about what ever Inverter based welder

This is my setup, plus a cutting rig, and a little Hobart Handler 140 mig...for the bucket above.image.jpg image.jpg

I am fairly new to welding, and have a question about a welding table for home/hobby use.

Are there any drawbacks to building a table out with a wood (2x4 or 4x4) frame and a 1/4" steel top?

The only tables I have seen are all built entirely of steel (did I answer my own question? LOL)

Being that I am a woodworker, and just learning welding, it would be easier for me to build a wood bench.

Other then starting it on fire under the steel plate .

Getting a Hot Spark into one the the joints

Then you might just want to soak things with water before welding.

In all seriousness Woodworking and Welding don`t mix in close proximity way to much flammable sawdust in nooks and crannies despite the Maids best efforts to keep things clean

    Makes sense.

    Steel table it is.

    More welding practice!

Harbor Frieght sells a decent welding table, with a tilting top. I like steel sawhorses at 25k pounds capacity, each.image.jpg

Back to welding in the shop today, 6010 open root plates.
3/8" plate 37.5 degree bevel 3/32" gap land is the width of the nickel or a little heavier 1/8" fleet weld 5p+ rod at 83 amps

Still working on getting the puddle size/timing down but I think Monday when I go back it should be fairly simple.

Do any of y'all know about arc force control (Miller machines)? the teacher doesn't know much about it other than 6010 welds better on 50 and 7018 welds better on 15-20.

The Arc force is a way to soften the arc like 7018 or turning it up gives one a more crisp arc one gets from a 6010.

    Personal preference !!

Changes output characteristics without increasing output current .

Then one most often wants to change settings between different positions

Over the years it has been called by many different names by different Manufactures

What they all do is change the induction

I think 80 % or more people have no clue just like changing frequency on the Dynasty

All steel and no wood is def your best bet. just build your own to suit your needs. Here's a small light duty table I just built as an auxiliary to my main table. All 11 gauge cold roll.

    Very nice.

Could you post a picture of the underside of the tabletop? I'd like to see how you supported the top.

    Thanks.
