I am thinking about going to school to become a certified welder. I haven't welded much though. Does anyone have any advice on what to look for in welding schools? Also I'm down in San Diego if anyone is down here and knows of a good place to go.
Any advice of how to start off is welcome!

Well I've always wanted to learn how to TIG weld and I figure since I'm getting something new I might as well get something that can while I'm spending. I know I won't buy a stand alone TIG just to learn on.

This will be my 3rd MIG welder so I know how useful it is. I think it's more of I like a challenge and I like the way TIG can do some precision welding.

It doesn't appear to of ever been modified. That's what's strange. I found another gun tonight for it and it has the same connection as all the others I've found. Here's a pic of the one I found. Mine simply has two wires with blade connections on the end. The one they are showing as a replacement for mine won't even go through the front of the welder to get into the cabinet to plug it in.

Most tig welders can stick weld too. For me, its the best compromise.

What's going on here. Too hot. Too slow too fast. Every now and then I get in a slump and I am going against myself not holding in the middle long enough.

Too hot and/or moving too quick not giving the wire time to fill it in.

Looks like poor joint design although it might be the picture

    Lack of practice .

Are you having trouble seeing the puddle ??

Lens dirty or to dark ??

you should be able to see your not holding long enough on the top toe of the weld

Numbers don`t mean anything only to you

.023 wire and slower travel speed your needing to move to fast for the wire your using at your skill level

    slower speed more control

unless your doing production piece rate welding is not a timed event

    Fresh metal, 1/4 spring hanger.

Granted they aren't dimes. Can see the puddle fine. Must have been moving too fast. I have more 1/4 plate I'll mess around with some tonight.

    Look fine to me.

I always know I'm proud of a weld when I think it's a shame to have to coat it with paint:)

    Lots of undercut.

Was late last night after work I decided I would weld them up. Was pausing at the bottom more and sweeping the top.

Hey there. I just invested in a weld machine so that I may teach myself the art of welding. It is a Millermatic 35. I tried it out in the guys shop that I bought it from, and it welder beautifully. Currently I am lacking 220v in the shop, a welding hood, and gas bottle. I plan on installing 50 amp service in the shop, stopping by the local weld supply to talk about renting a small bottle of Ar/co2 mix. One thing I don't know much about is the welding hoods. I know I want an auto darkening hood, I just don't know which I should go with as far as brand. I don't think I should go with Harbor Freight as I wouldn't trust the safety of my eye sight with that. Anyone recommend a fairly inexpensive auto darkening hood that is of good quality? I don't mind having it shipped, I am still at least a week away from installing the power to the shop. I appreciate y'alls helpful input. Oh and a pic of the machine just for reference.WP_20170129_12_39_55_Pro.jpg

I also started welding not too long ago. Didn't want to spend hundreds on a welding helmet so I purchased this one after reading reviews. It's worked flawlessly for me. But maybe some of the more experienced guys will be able to steer you in the right direction.

The HF hood is just fine. I've used them for years.

Amazon had one that is very highly rated as well.

Do you need 50 amps for that machine? All my Miller welders are fine on 30 amps.

I just don't feel I can trust HF with my safety. The welder is rated at 26 amps, but I plan on a larger compressor eventually as well.

    Just trying to save money.

Welders are rated different according to the welding code book.
