I recently picked up a Miller 140 Autoset to work on a few projects. I haven't welded in a long, long time and then it was just stick or oxy/act gas.

I built a small "T" out of 2" square stock to carry a gas jug on the VersaHaul (hitch mounted m/c carrier). I haven't enjoyed a project as much.

Since I have flammable stuff in the garage, I usually push everything outside to work (nice protected area) so for the hitch mount, I went flux core. I do run gas--Argon/CO2 mix. CO2 gives you better penetration in steel but the added Argon makes the weld prettier :D

One thing I noticed with flux core is that the flux obscures your view of the puddle and that makes it harder to make nice welds (not to forget the mess it leaves). I liked my auto-darkening helmet; it makes striking the arc a billion times easier.

I feel pretty lucky as far as supplies go. There's a Praxair about a mile away but they will have to order the big stuff and don't have much in the way of consumables but about three miles away is this little shop that has anything you could possibly want; a bunch of guys who know their stuff and great prices. I might buy a plasma cutter from them (Miller 375).

Honestly if you're willing to spend another 200.. look at the Miller 211 machine. It has the adjustability to be a 110/115 welder along with 220. I will be purchasing one in the near future and hooking up a spool gun to it.

lol. oh really, and millers are?
it just depends on what line of work you are in. 99% of your structural welders are gonna be running a miller. if you go on a real pipe job there seldom will be anything but lincolns. rig welders are all lincolns. personelly you couldnt give me a miller i run a lincoln on my truck. but if i were looking at a mig machine i would def. look at millers. they have a whole line for the "garage" welder. lincoln focuses their attention towards the industrial end a little more.

    Is this the one?
I see it runs on either 115 or 230. And I think they give you a handfull of plugs that you can switch out on the fly.
This looks like the one I will be going with. Thoughts anyone?

Yeah that's the one. The main selling features for me is the ability to use two different types of voltage. Not to mention has damn near the power to weld as good as 220 only welders on thicker steel.
