Are you pulling the weld or pushing it? I'm pretty sure you are pulling it. Consider pushing the weld. You can see what the puddle is doing much easier.

A may get disagreement, but I think pushing the weld is much easier. I very seldom pull a weld while mig welding.

Otherwise, the weld looks "decent". I would like to see what they look like before you hit it with the wire wheel.

I would remove that magnet when doing full welds. Use the magnet to get it tacked up but then remove it before you full weld, it can cause issues.

is that with gas or flux still?cause flux you dont want to push the weld like was stated.

Still haven't gotten gas. This is flux. I thought I was pulling?

yeah you are. i was just making that statement cause the guy you quoted said to push the weld.

the first one you posted looked undercut.

i need to break out the little welder i have now. should also go pick up some gas though.

Why? I have pushed all kinds of core wire and dual shield. It all depends on the situation.

I'm also wondering about your polarity of the welding leads. Are you sure you are not set to weld with gas?

You want the welding gun to be the negative power and the ground going to the positive lug if using flux core.

    Can you check your welder?

I welded with straight flux core the other day while I was on vacation, pretty happy with how it turned out.

Push Pull it all depends which way you can see the best.

OP just needs to understand what needs to happen in the puddle then make it happen on a regular basis

Then the wire can make a Big Difference I still Hate Self Shielded after 30 years

Well I figured I need to learn how to weld for a project coming up. Building a table. Got about 15 minutes under my belt so far.

My initial suggestion would be to find some longer pieces of metal to weld together. I don't think you have a long enough of a weld to get a feel for technique.

I do want you to get a handle on welding with flux core wire. Get a good idea how that works then switch to gas shielded. You will be amazed at how better it feels using the gas cover shield.

I started exactly the way you did. Mastered flux (got proficient) then switched to gas. It was a magical experience.

    Details?

    What welder?
    Flux core/solid core/gas?
    Pushing/pulling?

My initial impression is very nice for 1st time out.

2nd impression is you need to up the heat or slow down the wire speed.

    Otherwise, looks great.

Thank you. Using someone's Millermatic 185. Been doing both push and pull. Yeah I need time under the belt to get a feel for the speed of the wire. I am not consistent right now. I think if I got some longer pieces so that I could continue the bead.

Weld profile can tell you a lot.
