Myself and our people on site that are paid for their welding can TIG in basically every position you could ever need. I've personally done it hanging upside down from an i-beam 30 feet in the air to weld a rail back in place.

My favorite event was where I was laying inside of a chute approximately the size I was (I am not a large person), welding out the chute. I had a pair of TIG gloves, a pair of MIG gloves on over them, and another TIG glove wrapped around the torch and could still barely hold it. We burned up two 150STLs that weekend.

Yes the Maxstar 150 Syndrome there is help you don`t need to suffer alone .

Keep burning them up we keep fixing them or charging to say not this time.

I was not talking about real welders but the ones sitting at a bench never doing anything but flat .

They're a really nice welder until they stop working. Something about us running them at max for a few hours straight probably doesn't help.

Placed an order for a Hobart Handler 140, hoping it'll do what I'm looking for - I'm limited to a 110v outlet for the foreseeable future, unfortunately. Looking at 3/16s frame plates as my thickest project, everything else will be furniture and the like.

Congrats on ordering the welder! 3/16 for plates for cmc’s it may be ok but I,personally, wouldn’t trust it to be hot enough for welding sliders on. I’m sure some have and I’ll not dispute their results but it just doesn’t offer enough pens ration for me. If you have the availability to run a 220 line a 190 isn’t much more and works great with no problem turned ng it down for thinner stuff

Congrats! The HH140 is a very capable welder, you didn't speak of your skill level or any welding training. I'll make the assumption that your a beginner, everyone starts at that place. First check to see if there are any welding classes available; evening at the high school, community college, or maybe someone you know. Be careful of those as they might just teach you their bad habits. I have the HH140 also, it runs 0.030 flux core really well (it might run 0.023 flux core better but that size just doesn't exist). Flux core because it runs hotter with better penetration. The best welds come by using the best methods which methods including: an understanding of what it takes a solid weld, cleaning all containments from the weld area, including rust, millscale, paint, grease & oil. Not doing the cleaning means that that some of the arc energy is lost to burning that stuff, also the solids and gases will combine with the weld melt and tend to make it weaker. Thicker metal (3/16) can successfully welded with the 140 by doing the proper prep and preheating the weld area to 300-400 degrees.

Your first welding project should many hours of practice with inspecting and testing of your practice coupons. See Welding Tips & Tricks web site, Jody has lots of good videos for you to watch, quite a few are for the 140 class of welder. Also some of cutting, polishing and etching welds.

Like I said, no 220 available.
Thanks! I took a short class last Saturday, here's what I was able to do (posted a couple pages back):

Done with a Miller 225 something or other.

So Flux core can get deeper penetration? I ordered some solid core .030 ER70s6 and had planned on running gas. Maybe I'll pick up some flux core and try that out before I buy a tank.

You will be fine issuing that machine with gas. The only thing you will sacrifice is speed. Who gives a shit about speed if you are not in business to get parts out the door.

Start out with the flux core, adjusting the settings to minimizing the spatter is a great tool to have on your belt. The welds look nice but I believe it's a little cold. Photo is to dark to see what is going on a the edges of the weld, some of the edges look OK but not the whole length. Grinding the mill scale would help with the seeing.

The class I took was just a 4 hour deal and the instructor was pretty busy with a couple people who just couldn't get it, so I didn't get much feedback - thanks! What should I look for to tell if it's cold? By edges I assume you mean the edge of the bead?

I'll get some flux core wire to play around with. Won't have the machine for another week or so, depending on shipping, but I'd love to get proficient at both flux and solid core.

Just don't make the mistake I did.

I saved up so I could sell my 120v machine and buy a 240v unit. Which I did.

I wish I would have kept my 120v machine. I missed out a lot of emergency work that would have paid very well.

Not that I look forward to getting woke out of a deep sleep to do a remote welding job.

I still got woke up, just was able to sorry, no can do...

On second thought, maybe it was a good decision. I dunno?

Sorry I didn’t know what you were referring to as unavailable. I was thinking if renting a house or something perhaps a 220 extension cord from m the dryer outlet or something maybe get work. If it’s unavailable that 140 ought to be a good machine. I didn’t mean to confuse things. Just kinda thought maybe there was a way. Either way you’ll have fun n with it. I’ve been doing this stuff for a long time and it’s the only thing part of my job I still enjoy

I thought the same thing when I got rid of mine. I couldn’t pass it up though when my neighbor bought a plasma cutter thinking it was a welder ? Then he wanted to trade for my little welder I said SURE

So, what. As long as you got it at a decent price, you are ahead of the game.

The HH140 is fine for sliders and the like...it’ll blow through .120 wall all day too. Tacoma frames are like 1/8” anyway....

My truck and all of my friend’s trucks have been SAS’ed, exo’ed, etc on 120v machines with no issues.

I use one all the time fabricating big fenders and light structural stuff mainly sheet metal and it works great. Good to know though. I had a Lincoln 140 IDK I forgot was I just didn’t trust it on 3/16 or up.
