a few weeks ago i had a little trial by fire at work.
long time (hobby) tig welder, never tried mig before. tried flux core years ago before i learned to tig, was terrible at it.

i show up to start my night shift and day shift tells us they cannot locate one of four engine stands for a jt8d engine that is being removed from an aircraft the next day. they also cannot locate the bolt on mounts that bolt to the engine before it is removed from the aircraft and act as adapters to the stands.
with no one on shift in the millwright dept, no one in the ground service equip. shop, and no one on shift with structural steel fab and welding experience except myself i am quickly nominated to build the missing engine stand.

the plates were cut out with a torch and only the critical surfaces ground flat which is why the one looks crooked as.

I want to know where the 4th stand walked off to. Don't you always need 4?

It's not like that can go missing as easy as my 10 mm socket.

The 4th stand is supposed to be adjustable. My guess is it was either painted a different colour or looked a little different and the guys who were sent to fetch them all from our “back 40” missed it. I didn’t go looking myself but I agree with it not being missing. We have it somewhere, they weigh like 50 lbs or so. And painted bright red. Shit like that doesn’t roll down a floor drain or grow legs...

I'm gonna need some closure here. Find that stand. Report back.

ahhh whats the worst that could happen?
to be honest i was a little nervous about my stand holding and a lot nervous about the adapters holding. the other stands have a stress test inspection date stamped into them... they left that engine on the stands for a week!

    thank you!

It appears there's somebody else they should have in their fab dept.

Tomorrow. I was going to do them this morning but was waiting for paint to dry on one of them. Installed my twin sticks instead. I'm glad I waited. It was much easier without them in the way!

You put the first case in? I’d love to have a manual transfer case and locking hubs for that matter

Aha! I thought the sliders looked a little different, shorter, but didn’t want to say anything
