Is this in reference to my pics?

I don't think I could have any better iron to work with. That rust is only discoloration. That metal was straight from the supplier and sat outside in the rain for 1 night.

I think he’s just saying wire wheel to the joint would help. Less contaminants to get in the way and everything. Weld looks totally good though

Some people get spoiled living in the dry climates .

This is good compared to most steel coming from steel suppliers .

I think the picture makes it look worse

I don't think wire brushing that iron would help much. In addition, I don't have the time do do that for such little gain.

WBing that might help a new welder out though, so it is good advice.

Exactly, Craig. That rust can be wiped off rubbing you thumb over it.

hit the area with a flap disc anywhere you need penetration. its not just the rust, the mill scale should be removed. without this, there is contamination in the weld. proper prep is important for any weld to be sound. a back bevel on the angle iron wouldn't be a bad thing either

This showed up at my door this week. They are now marked as "201 XD". Works beautifully for a CCW. Adjustable AC freq and 250hz DC pulse for less than $800. Can't beat it for hobby type jobs, two thumbs up.

I come from a industrial/mechanical background. No margin for failure.
Zero prep is for stick welding 3 rail pipe to build fences on a farm.
This year I had a GM pass to SEMA. As I walked around and looked at the cool shinning cars and trucks, I realized just because you can, doesn't mean you should, and as long as you pay for a booth spot, you can display some of the crappiest Fab and most people will have no idea and think your fancy custom abortion on wheels is a fabrication masterpiece.

    Practice, practice, practice.

If you have not seen him, look up Jody, welding tips and tricks on youtube. You can learn from this dude.

How bad is it to have to leave the welds like this on the gusset plate? It's a 3/16" thick piece that has the bottom side welded also but not with a flat grind. This is for a trailer build that I'm starting and only my second big project I've done since getting my welder; the first was my rear bumper, which has held up to some hard abuse on the rocks -- and that was with flux-core.

The holes/pores where the two pieces were welded together. I wasn't getting enough heat and gas on some of the gussets I was welding and after grinding down the welds flat the holes were visible. The structural joints between the C-channels look much better than this but there's still some evidence of the same -- just not as bad.

Ok. So you are worried about the porosity? You mention the other side is welded. Correct? How do those welds look?

If you are using 70S wire, that has 70,000 Lbs of shear resistance/inch of weld. Do you think you have several inches of good weld?

The fact that you can recognize an inferior weld is a plus. You know that you need more heat to remove the porosity, so that's another asset.

I'm only seeing one image and an icon for another possible image. Did you have more than 1 pic? I would like to see your project in a bigger context. I can't tell what part of the trailer this is. (I think I know, but am unsure).

I was able to see your second pic.

You will have no trouble with that trailer. You have no problem with that trailer being strong.

Not many trailer builders even bother with the gussets.

Now you have shamed me into getting something more done on my trailer.

If it is as hot and Humid there to hot to weld or paint

The thing with porosity at least cracks seldom form
