Thanks for the advice! That makes sense about the smaller welder and accessibility.

Anyone know if the Hobart 140 MJP2 linked be adequate to build tube bumpers and some small time fabrication? I plan on building some bumpers down the line (if I get good enough) and don't want to buy a welder that can't handle it. Sorry for the noob question, I'm still learning the basics.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I had one and it's a great little welder. It will only do up to 1/8" on one pass with gas but it works great. I welded my sliders on with it and they are still holding strong.

The Hobart 140 is great. I was able to build this (all 1/4" wall) bumper using it (with flux core) without any problems. Some of it was multiple passes, but in most areas I used a heavy bevel and easily did it in a single pass.

Nice work. Yeah I'm going to see what used are available at the time, but I might pick up that 140 if nothing else looks good.

I want to start welding. I don't want to do anything big. I want to work my way up to building a bed rack for my truck. I have no idea about this stuff. I prefer to have the bed rack made of stainless steel tubing. What kind of welder would I need and what size? I'm guessing an MIG welder. I want a small welder. In the other thread, you mention paint but here you mention stainless... Are you intending to paint stainless? If so, I don't understand why the extra effort/cost. Mild steel would be much easier to weld for a beginner welder, and if it's painted, no one will know the difference but you.

    Just a thought...

We picked up a millermatic 252 today at work to help with a current project, got a chance to run some 3" beads on some 1/2" plates for a few hours and holy shit that thing welds nice! May look into picking one up for my garage sometime in the future, I dont have a need to have a machine that powerful but whynot at the same time. :D

Crap. I didn't mean stainless. My bad. But I just wanted to make some kind of bed rack and paint it. Whoops. I'm new to all of this. Even painting metals. I usually paint plastics.

EDIT: And I'm starting a royal blue theme to my truck. It would be a blue color.

Didn't go off any plans, but the finished 'look' is based off a couple trucks on TTORA.

Some pics of the finished product on this page of my build

Another welding n00b here. Taking a stick welding class this semester.

Was doing incredibly poorly up until this week. Walked out of class this past tuesday with very solid passes of all available electrodes. 3 types of electrodes available. I think it's 6013, 6010 and 7018. Do not like the 6010 electrode, really like the other 2.

Biggest problem for me is/was just getting the arc started. Come to find out one issue I was having was with the actual machine, I was on AC current, switched over to DC+. I don't know if it made a difference, but I was actually getting the arc started and making beads afterwards.

Auto darkening helmets FTW as well.

    DC makes arc starting easier.

    And I disagree:D

Going to start building my front skidplate next week for my welding project at school. I have access to all the fab tools etc.. and i'm just looking to make the simplest possible design that will use something thicker than 1/16" steel to protect my front end and transfer case. Took my old one off and got a picture. IMAG0125_515bf66606c48cc0a6e8054e0500994ba264bed6.jpg
Just looking for any advice as far as mounting and stuff from people who may have done this before. Will i be able to bend 1/4" steel or will i need to go with 1/8 or 3/16". Thanks TW

3/16" is more than enough for the front skidplate. Anything else on the belly I'd use 1/4". I run a 3/16" budbuilt front skid and it has held up really well under heavy abuse. The 3/16" belly pan on the other hand is a raisin at this point. Bending shouldn't be much of an issue. Box Rocket, Slodgetto and others have used the 'whiskey bend' method that seems to be pretty effective.

    Agreed ^^

I made a ifs skid last year for my 2nd gen, used 3/16" and the same bending method as posed above, i use it to jack my truck up from without any issues.
