Good thing I won't listen to your opinion since you can't possibly make a determination on whether this is or isn't for me.

A trade is good for anyone.

If you can't take a little ribbing, a trade is definitely NOT for you.

    Wanna be a welder?

Starch. Lots and lots of starch. Your pants and shirts should stand up by themselves.

Got a wife? Perfect. cheat on her with a ugly stripper.

Diesel. Buy a diesel and get a machine in the bed. Preferably a SA200. Round barrel. Not octagon. That earns you more welding points than anything ever will.

Cuss. Cuss everything. Literally every other word should be “fuck”

Fucking fitters. Fucking foreman. Fucking rods. Fuck you pay me. Etc

Time to weld? EXCUSES. Come up with as many as you can and use them. Don’t ever admit to sucking.

And learn to drink. A yeti cooler with beer is a must. It has to stay iced down 24/7 365

You do all that and I promise people will think you’re slick.

But for real. Learning to weld is cool but what’s your plans? What kinda welding? What kinda money do you want? Do you wanna get dirty or stay clean? Travel or be home every night ? Not being dick but we got welders of all walks of life in here so it helps to know what you think welding is like and what you expect for money and all that

I think welding is a pretty awesome trade. I have been bouncing back between carpentry and welding. I have been wanting to fabricate my own trailer for camping and such, so having the experience and knowledge to do so would be great.

I'm a single man, I have no hour requirement. My only desire is to learn the craft, get good at it, work for a company, fabricate my own stuff, and live without grasping for air under water.

Just trying to determine how to move forward towards school for it while having to pay for my truck and various bills. Mike Rowe scholarship closed till Spring 2020, but haven't checked grants/other scholarships yet.

I said billions in my original post.

From what I hear about welding, it's a big jump up from where I am now pay wise, so I don't have a dollar goal. I just want to be able to not worry about bills so damn much. Even 30k a year is good to me. Get super good and make even more.

You really need to figure out what you want to do with your welding. There are literally welding jobs from minimum wage to $30-40 bucks an hour all the way up to $100+ an hour depending on experience, qualifications, location, ect.

@weldertaco listed off a bunch of good questions to really think about and answer and people here can help point you in the right direction to go. Just saying I want the money! isn't going to get you much help.

Kind of like weldertaco mentioned...theres a lot of welders/trades people here in all sorts of different areas. Home fab guys, pipe welders, structural, shipbuilding, aerospace, ect.

Construction has changed throughout the years. When I started off 20 years ago as an electrician apprentice, we got yelled at, cussed at, etc....and you had to just man up and and take it and bust your ass.

Nowadays, I don't see that as much, the kids now would either quit or try and file a complaint or some shit, so the jobsites are a little more quiet, as far as yelling. Lol. Sad, but true. I wish the kids now had to go through exactly what I went through.

Gah you’re one of those types already.. shady ass scared to just say I want $15/hr or whatever.

    It all matters BECAUSE

If you wanna be a badass pipe/tube/combo welder... goto fucking school. You “can” learn on some jobs but the practice time is minimal and ads stress to your daily life. Learn how to weld and weld good then hit the ground running and figure it out. Mouth shut. Ears open. You can make $80k+ going that route. Easily but you’re likely going to have to travel unless you’re near a big city.

Want to make $150k+ ? Pipeline. Pipeline. Pipeline. You have to invest in yourself with a machine and tools and truck and blah blah blah but it’ll all pay itself off in the long run. Also goto school cause learning is easier from someone who knows wtf they’re doing. But you’ll never be home

Want to make $15/hr in a fab shop? No school. Not worth it. Get a buddy to show you the basics with mig and just practice.

Wanna get dirty? Construction. Wanna stay clean? Fab shop as well.

I went by the ol' steel store today and bought a 24ft 1/4in thick square tube (PTR) in 4in x 4in around. I had it all cut in 2ft segments.
