No, they’re just some zinc coated carriage bolts. Cut the round part off and welded it to my mount. Regarding your stainless steel question, I’ve done it before on other stuff. Does that make it right? No idea but so far it’s held.

Ah, okay. I might try it. At least the stud that the wingnuts attaches to will still be "stainless". I'll see what happens.

It welds just fine. Just try not pull too much of the fumes into your lungs. Stainless fumes is not something you want to get a lot of.

I know about the fumes first hand because I got a little sick from it. Thanks for looking out, it's definitely a serious thing to consider.

Keep the heat on the stainless till you get a decent puddle cus it takes a bit more than the mild

You use 309 to weld stainless to carbon.

Seeking that miller respirator made me realize I never wear mine and probably should.

I welded the slot on mine first as well. Need to go back and fix the garbage welds actually holding them on the truck though. And clean the rust in order to do that..

Yes you can weld stainless to mild steel I do it all the time either use 309L wire or electrodes .

My jobs were usually more involved then just a few bolts

Some people say they do it with regular mild steel hard wire

I'll just experiment and try it with normal hardwire. It is only a couple tacks to hold a hidden bolt head, so a knob or wingnut can be threaded on the other side without having to hold the bolt head. If it doesn't work, I'll go ahead and look for some 309 SS wire.

    Question:
How can you tell if your mig gun needs replacing?

my symptoms are that the trigger only works sometimes at varying “throttle” When it’s working it’s fine but if I stop laying a bead, it takes a few tries to start again. Then it’ll weld with an almost pulsing action. I’m optimistic that it’s not the machine and it’s the cheaper fix (gun).

I had to change out the drive motor on my spool gun. Your symptoms sound familiar.

Are you going thru a lot of tips?

Edit: I've had to change out trigger assemblies in my Miller mig gun as well.

Can you take it apart? Could be as simple as the switch.

I’m hoping it’s just the switch. I’ll take it apart later today. If it’s as simple as a solder job for a loose connector, I’m good but didn’t want to just start taking shit apart if I was overlooking an obvious fix.

The Miller guns come apart with no tools.

I haven’t even looked at it to see how it comes apart. I happened when I was finishing up a CMC and I forced it to finish the job. By the end I was dirty and tired and just put everything away and figured I’d take a look later today.
