Anything welding

Did a lot of welding and grinding on this skid today. Since I raised the front crossmember up on the truck, I had to lengthen the front by 2” because of the sharp angle increase. Just mimicked what I cut off, and made it out of 1/4”. Came out pretty great and gained 16° angle out of it.

 

So I’ve kinda done this out of boredom once, but not quite. It was a standard generator with a transformer mig welder. The gen was a 3200 craftsman and it was an old as hell Mac tools (made in Italy) welder. Neither pieces of equipment liked it, but it did the job. Which was putting the supertrapp on the generator.

 

When the CSM says “I’m scrapping this piece of shit eye sore”...And you reply “I can fix it”.

Hope the guys and gals in the barracks can use it to burn meat for years to come.

Added cary handles to the sides, cut the doors off and re-welded so they actually close, fixed the locking lever for the vent door, straightened the exhaust pipes, blasted off all the rust (as much as I could ), cut off broke ass wheels, and painted the frame in a 500 degree black. Just need to hit the rest of it with a 2,000 degree paint in the appropriate color.....(Cav)

 

Anyone in the Bay Area (I’m in South San Francisco) that would be up for helping show me the ropes a little bit? I got my new welder the other day and need to set it up and start practicing so I can get to work on clearing my 37s, building my sliders and rear bumper, and making my front bumper fit. Have a bunch of time off next week and it would be really awesome to have someone experienced help me set things up and show me some basics so I don’t wreck stuff lol, maybe also point me in the direction of somewhere to buy scrap for practice.. definitely pick up some scrap to practice on before doing any big projects like sliders/bumpers/etc

practice makes perfect. You’ll get the hang of it

Made a bamf crossbar for someone today

 

I have to build one of these for my truck and another for a friend. Curious as to why you put the gusset on the tubing.

 

The whole point of the crossbar is to keep the two hangers from flexing inward towards each other. With the bent tubing, I didn’t think it would be very effective at that. Hence, the gussets. A straight bar is the strongest, but he wanted it tucked up.

If you want to get really trick you can do Mohawk gussets in the bends. You cut slits in either side of the tube through the bend and put the gusset inside of the tube. You then weld it back up and it looks really clean
