Here's a pic of where I aim to keep the tip. In the background are the first beads I ran on 1/8". Second pic is a closeup of the last two beads. Definitely looks better than the coupons.

Vertical dual shield is always fun. Ready to get back to welding pipe though.

Might be a bit too much wire speed. Maybe not have the torch so far from the weld. Try to imagine the gas as a cloud that surrounds the weld. It's job is to keep oxygen from contaminating the molten metal. Did you try pushing the weld?

Hmmm. Something is off because there shouldn’t be any porosity. Are you using the welders recommended settings on the inside of the door?

Not yet, I'll try pushing, slowing down the speed, and keeping the tip closer for the next set.

We love a good challenge. Keep the pics coming.

I'm gonna be driving in a few, but will check in after a bite of dinner.

No need to start another thread. This is exactly what this thread is for.

Your last pic, the bottom two beads have a lot of under cut... meaning the bead is melting into the material too much. Turn down the heat a bit and hold the gun closer to your work. When you weld your bead, let the torch stay towards the leading edge of the pool and follow the leading edge to run the bead.

edit: we talk about porosity, that’s due to a last of gas among other things. Holding the torch too far away will definitely give you a combination of lack of gas and a bad weld. The heat is causing the wire to melt before it’s able to penetrate and make the weld and the gas is dissipated before it’s able to do its job on the metal. Keep your gun about 1/4” away from your work. I like to hold the tip of the gun with my non trigger hand while welding. ie: hold the tip with my thumb while letting my pinky finger glide across the metal. This makes me keep a consistent distance from my work.

I noticed that as well, but I wanted to work on getting the machine somewhat adjusted.

We are quite a ways form worrying about undercut in my opinion.

True. I very seldom weld with 1 hand. You get amazing control with a bit of guidance from your non power hand. Are you welding with 1 hand?

I agree, I was just pointing it out since it’s a good thing to see to identify what he’s doing wrong here.

It is a great example. We can refer to it down the road.

Is there still mill scale on that metal? You want the metal as shiny and clean as possible too.

I’m so bad about cleaning up mill scale. My laziness gets the best of me.

That to me doesn’t seem like it will clean much. It will scrub like no ones business but how will it absorb the gunk on the surface? I’d think you will need a rag with some sort of solvent?

I’ve typically just used acetone on a rag then burn off any residual with a torch... when I clean up the junk anyways.

I'm not sure I ever tried to weld through it. Might try in a few just to see. Out here finally enjoying a break in the heat with the pup.

Mill scale does not come off with a solvent. Gotta be ground off.

Yea, I read mill scale but my brain registered the oily junk that the steel is coated with.
