As the Miller Multimatic 215 is only set up to run with the SP 100 and the SP150 If I remember they reverse the trigger wire so the Spoolmatic 15A and 30A will not work

Know going in the Spoolmate150 and 100 have a 4month warranty!!

 

Talking about spool guns, anybody ever played with a spoolmatic 1? Still works fine for a 30+ year old gun haha.

 

Here's my take on the spool gun. If you're making 4 aluminum boat trailers a day, go for it. Big, bulky, and $300??? Not for me. I'd rather go AC/DC for bigger money and be able to reach into a fuel cell, cylinder head yadda yadda yadda. Still have to buy a 100% argon bottle.....

I got really lucky when I got my Primeweld AC/DC TIG unit. I didn't have an Argon cyl.

I have a nephew who collects scrap metal on weekends for his "garage money". He had brought me an empty oxygen cylinder he picked up. The local gas company counter guy said" I am really not supposed too...", but he traded me that for an Argon cylinder. Boy, that made my day!

 

Damn, that's good luck. They make some serious money on deposits. Makes it safe for everyone tho.

Yeah, he said they mainly refuse because they want to discourage theft of peoples tanks by those looking for refill/trade-ins.

Think you guys are missing a big thing hahah. And that’s the fact my tig skills aren’t very good lol.

I have an argon bottle and I have access to a diversion Miller. My tig skills just aren’t there for me to feel confident. I’ve used a spool gun before and was never disappointed haha. I’ll pick up the cheaper one and see how it goes and in free time put in some more time with a tig torch.

 

Agreed, TIG is not for me. Spool gun MIG works great.

 

Aww you can tig. Just practice a lot LOL. The cool thing is we can do what we want. It's fun. I tell everyone "I am 64 years old and if I want a do this or that, I will" Ahahahahahha. Lots of cheap tools out there to get it done. Just have that wad of cash ready to go. LOL

They do seem to almost last forever the downside Big and Bulky at the time it gave a shop a aluminum option .

A easy way to get inside a 45' trailer and do what needed done.

 

I vote spend the spool gun money on Tig rods go from there if you understand the puddle and what needs to happen it is just a matter of practice on New Aluminum trying to practice on old dirty aluminum that you can`t clean gets very frustrating .

 

If I was making Aluminum Trailers once the contract was worked out I would have a XRA control and a Alumpro or Alumapro lite gun as soon as possible.

Having used Spoolguns to me they are for emergency one of a kind repairs or a last resort.

Though some people do love them.

I am getting better. A lot more comfortable. Still nervous with tig but everything is a breeze! Just did 2- 1” plate with no power tools the other day and knocked both out in 3 hours with 7018. I was cruising lol.

but the pipe passed. Got her done in about 3 hours as well.

trying to catch up, unless I am missing something I think @koditten meant less wire speed and more heat. Not thinner wire. .030 is plenty for 1/4” like you want and going to .025 is going to be more difficult to do in a single pass. Not impossible but harder.

I could be taking this all wrong, been inhaling spray paint all day.
