In my thinking since the 4WD ECU instructs the Combination Meter to turn on/off the Locker indicator, it might be possible to inject a signal upon the CANBUS to do the same. The present iteration of the product mentioned above does not have that capability. Not knocking the designer as it requires a whole other electronics specialty. A "tune" would not solve anything, only a dedicated circuity sending out the instruction.

I think from my knowledge a tune COULD rewrite the software in the computer so the locker can be engaged at any time. It would have to be a specialty tune

theres a separate dedicated computer that deals with the 4x4 system and locker. the actual ecu cant control when the locker is engage. vftuner (orange virus tuning at the time) tried to do this already. that computer tells ecu to turn on gauge light through canbus system. almost any alteration to the wiring trying to dummy the light on will throw an error code. ive seen a guy on here before say he was going to try and directly solder wire to the led chip on the gauge somehow but never commented after.

that being said id be curious if you somehow found out a way to do it. people been trying for 9 years now and have not been successful in doing so.

Well i definitely dont have the knowledge to do so. If i can somehow find a guy that can add a tune that will engage the locker anytime then i would be thrilled. Or even if you know a guy. At this point im willing to drive across state to get this done. But for the wiring aspect. If people have been trying to do this for 9 years now then chances are its not possible. Toyota really isnt making this easy

The Toyota engineers that designed this system have to be laughing still that no one can figure out a simple 'grey wire' mod to make this work.

Does anyone know if this will work with the 2lo mod? It's been a couple years since I installed mine but I think it used the same plug location...?

This is supposition on my part, but the guy who tried to wire an extra lead into the Combination Meter most likely fried the board and didn't want to admit it. The LEDs on the Meter probably run at ~5VDC and every LED/Indicator circuit I have seen presented on this forum has been ~12VDC. Applying 12VDC where 5VDC is expected will fry most components. Even 12VDC on the BCM 9VDC mirror indicators blew one of my mirror indicators for me.

What is needed is a germanium or Schottky (not silicon) steering diode on the meter before the LED; and another steering diode & inline resistor to reduce the applied 12VDC down to an acceptable ~5VDC applied directly to the Locker on/off LED. This last statement assumes the Meter LED/Indicators are tied to ground, if not more will be needed.

one of the problems is the new locker doesn't use a simple 12v source anymore. it uses 12v to initially engage but once engage it drops voltage down to 8v. paired with a new canbus 4x4 computer thats paired with the ecu its quite a bit more "intelligent". the days of simply shorting a ground wire to trick control module are gone.

Exactly. Over engineered to protect us from ourselves. You can't sue Toyota when some moron takes out a family because they decide to lock their rear end doing 60 going around a curve.

im sure this could be a big argument but at highway speeds you wont be taking a turn sharp enough to really affect anything. would probably not even feel it engage. not sure where this whole thing that a locked rear end will result in total loss of control. that really isnt the case at all

So what's wrong with the Anytime Locker kit? Why do you need a tune when there is a plug and play kit?

he said he just doesn't like the little indicator light in the kit and wants the factory dash light to work. understandable to a point but quite an undertaking to do. he could just get that kit now anyways and figure the light out later. if you see my earlier post i just have it mounted in a switch blank so no permanent holes drilled if that gives him an idea.
